Renovation Report: YourAsian on Permanent Vacay?

Tribeca: YourAsian, the misguided takeout Asian spot from the owner of the classic and shuttered Jerry's in Soho, is temporarily shuttered. According to the signage, this is just a summer break, but a peek inside reveals there's a full-on reno going on. The restaurant could just be taking advantage of the summertime lull to make some changes (like Daniel, 21 Club, Freeman's). However, given the age of the place—four months— and the early negative response, chances are this is a permanent vacation. We wouldn't be surprised if Jerry Joseph was scrapping the project in order to open something new or to ready the space for a new buyer.

Eater Match Game: Grom, Benoit, Wildwood, and More

For a little rainy day fun we present Eater Match Game. Match the correct comment from all the usual sources—Yelp, Menupages, Citysearch, blog comment sections—with the correct new restaurant. The prize? You will be slightly less productive at work for the next 5 minutes.

Today's Restaurants: A: Grom, B: Brasserie Cognac, C: Benoit, D: Arlo and Esme, E: Wildwood, and F: YourAsian.

And the reviews:
1) "Like a lot of NYC restaurants, they pack the place with tables, a couple too many in my opinion. It's tight in there...Plates, glasses and silverware were removed between courses, which I loved, but then next course would arrive long before your next round of silverware. One of our appetizers never appeared...We didn't have the chicken, but we asked others about it and only heard raves."

2) "...chickens were flying out of the kitchen...Those who haven’t ordered yet ask their server, “What is that?”...There’s no “voila!” as each plate is delivered. A suit and tie are no longer de rigeur. But the food is right out of the old school—or so it seemed to us."

3) "This is a case of a decent concept that's badly executed...After a few bites, I fled down the block to BonBon Chicken. Now that shit is good."

Thursday Opening Report: YourAsian Certified Open, Campo Opens Tonight, Annabelle Two Weeks Out

This is the Thursday Opening Report, a regular feature that provides the precise status of venues reported as open elsewhere. As per standard operating procedure around here, your contributions are so very welcome.

1) Tribeca: Flo Fab reports on the opening of YourAsian, the new Asian fast food joint and plywood vet from Jerry’s Deli owner Jerry Joseph. According to her, the place opened yesterday. She also shares the following info: “The chef, Ten Vong, has worked at Citronelle in Baltimore and at Yumcha in New York. At lunch, customers choose rice or noodles with Japanese, Chinese, Thai or Indonesian seasonings. In the evening, table service expands the geography to include Vietnam." Phone calls confirm it open. Status: Certified Open. 90 Chambers Street; 212-608-1700. [NYT]

2) Midtown: As we’re all aware by now, Alain Ducasse’s Benoit is supposed to open this Monday. TONY checks in this week with some details: “Capitalizing on buzz from his recently opened blockbuster, Adour, chef Alain Ducasse introduces a second New York eatery: This lavish bistro, a spin-off of locations in Paris and Tokyo, opens in the storied space that once housed La Cote Basque." Status: Not open. Opening Monday. 60 W. 55th Street; 646-943-7373. [TONY]

Plywood Special: Jerry (of Jerry's) To Open Chambers St. Asian Joint

2008_04_yourasian.jpg
Yes, that is a yin-yang

Jerry Joesph, owner of the now shuttered Soho institution Jerry's is opening a new restaurant at 90 Chambers St., to be called YourAsian. There were some rumors to that effect, but now the restaurant has been confirmed by the man himself. And what's even more exciting: the place is only 11 days out. This should be welcome news for any fans of the 20 year old Soho space, but don't expect the new project to look anything like Jerry's. For one thing, items from the lunch menu can be made in three minutes. For another, well, just check out that yin-yang on the signage. Here's the complete breakdown, from Jerry himself:

Cuisine: "We have selected some of our favorite dishes from Thailand, Indonesia and a small sampling of China and Japan and even Vietnam...the best food in Asian countries is found on the street, where it is usually cooked by a family that lives in the back of their stall and serves the food in the front of their quarter...Our goal is the serve that type of street fare."

EaterWire Deluxe Edition: Crosby Connection to Elizabeth, Jerry's to Tribeca, MePa Shenanigans!

Strap in for today's edition of EaterWire. Frankly, we've got more news coming at you here than we know what to do with.

2008_01_crosbyme.jpg

SOHO/NOHO—Following last week's news that beloved hole-in-the-wall sandwich maker the Crosby Connection would soon be forced from its Crosby Street haunt, a special correspondent sends the above image, posted this afternoon. The signage confirms the rumor that owner Joey Cramarossa will migrate a few blocks northeast, where he'll join a block that includes Rice on Elizabeth and Tom & Jerry's. [EaterWire]

TRIBECA—More potential good news on the resuscitation front. Per a tipster, "Jerry Jospeh of Jerry's in Soho is opening his new concept at 90 Chambers [between Broadway/Church]. Gonna be a fast food Asian spot, I believe, called Your Asian. Def not high end, fast food and Chambers Street appropriate." Color this completely unconfirmed, but intriguing; true or not, if Joseph does get back in the game (as he's long promised he would), he's pretty much starting from scratch. [EaterWire Inbox]

MEATPACKING—Finally, file this one under, wow. A tipster emails, "Jeffrey Jah reopened The Inn LW12 this weekend for drinks only. The only signs of 'construction' were that beer lines/taps had been ripped out and POS systems replaced by a simple cash register. Bartenders were selling drinks on a 'cash only' basis and turning away customers showing up for dinner reservations with a lame story about 'problems with ConEd.' So shady." [EaterWire Inbox]
