Hangover Observations: Celebrate Flatiron Chefs

Last night chefs, media types, foodies, and plenty of suits from the neighborhood stopped by Madison Square Park for the Celebrate Flatiron Chefs event to benefit the Madison Square Park Conservancy. Like most of these neighborhood tasting events (see Taste of Tribeca, Taste of the LES), tickets were pricey ($150) but food, drink, and chef spotting were in abundance. While we're going to file this one under uneventful, there were a few highlights:

1) Almost all the big name chefs (The Pelaccio at Fatty Cue, Zakarian with Willis Loughhead at Country, Ivy Stark at Dos Caminos) were manning their own tables, something you hope for in these kinds of events but don't always get.

2) Douglas Rodriguez of Nuela, the restaurant supposedly opening in the Sapa space, was there with bells on with exec chef Adam Schop. Rodriguez says the deal on the space is done, he'll open in October, and he'll get his team into the space in the first week of August.

3) Though Will Goldfarb is, and always has been, a crazy minx, his chocolates from the Dessert Studio bested most desserts in the event.

Zak Pelaccio makes an appearance, ahead.>>

First Word: Pelaccio, DeChellis and Goldfarb Collab on The Windsor

thewindsor1.jpg

This must be some kind of inside joke amongst chefs, because it's gone way over our head. Seems Zak Pelaccio (of Fatty Crab and consulting on a thousand restaurants fame), Josh DeChellis (of the doomed BarFry), Will Goldfarb (of Picnick, Dessert Studio, and general hooker fame) and Robert Truitt (Room4Dessert) are collaborating on a space called The Windsor, set to open at the end of March. The reveal, via The Life Vicarious, is in the form of a James Beard event listing:

"Preview what is sure to become one of the hottest downtown dining destinations of 2008...Join four of NYC’s most buzzworthy chefs as they introduce the Windsor, the cozy yet elegant collaboration they hope will become a hangout for chefs and food lovers alike."
The location of this surefire hit is not mentioned, but it's likely to be either 48 Carmine, which shares a garden with BarFry, or 51 Carmine, a space that DeChellis' was rumored to have taken over for a raw bar. "All the more reason too, to open sometime after the end of March," notes The Life Vicarious about the first space in re the shared garden. As for the kind of brunch one might procure at this spot, where only Truitt is likely to spend any real time cooking, the Beard event listing is pimping such items as a Veal Terrine alla Milanese with Endive–Parsley Salad and Sauce Gribiche. Just the thing you'll crave for brunch when the universe runs out of eggs.

Picnick Opening Day: Not Shacked Up Yet

2007_09_picnick.jpg

Will Goldfarb's kiosk-cluster Picnick opened as planned yesterday in Battery Park. On a gorgeous holiday Monday, would lines rival those of the Shake Shack? Per the report from Polis, who snapped the above photograph—nope, not yet. Which means the first to arrive got to sample the food—and the "uncrowded tables, providing a great spot to see the harbor, Red Hook, and the Statue of Liberty." EaterWire: Picnick Opening, Brooklyn Burger Bar DOH'd

Excuse us if we knock off a bit early today. The Beach beckons, and we happen to have the South Fork's last known bottle of Wolffer Rosé on ice. But before we go...

2007_08_picknick.jpgBATTERY PARK CITY—Here's an important bit of Dish for those spending the Labor Day Weekend in the city: Room 4 Dessert's Will Goldfarb confirms that Monday will be the opening day for the kiosk Picnick. We're not much for food porn, but a visit to Picnick's website is guaranteed to whet your appetite. Might we be looking at Shake-Shack-level buzz? Even despite the fact they won't go after a liquor license until spring, it's a real possibility. [Official Site]

DAILY DOH—From Park Slope, TONY's food blog The Feed brings word that Brooklyn Burger Bar is sporting the big yellow slapdown. [The Feed]

BURGERWIRE—Following yesterday's reader observation that ground chuck from Shake Shack burger purveyor Pat LaFrieda is available on the Upper West Side, El Cutlets has a LaFrieda representative confirm that yes, they sell "commodity meat" to some stores already, but new West Village outpost Market Table will be the first to sell the good stuff. Happy grilling. [Cutlets]

That's not it! One more bit o' 'Wire for the road. >>
