HUDSON SQUARE— Cutty is spreading the rumor that Eytan Sugarman and Justin Timberlake are looking into opening a second Southern Hospitality in the Deathwatched Steak Frites space. It makes sense that someone would take that space, since it is, after all, in the ICU, and reps tell Cizutty that they're looking into a number of locations. Just keep in mind that Sugarman is already in a fight with CB1 to open a "sports bar" at 6 Murray St., so you can bet opening Southern Hospitality Part 2 won't be smooth sailing [Cutlets]
EAST VILLAGE— Gothamist is reporting that East Village bar/comedy club/performance space Rififi will shutter tonight: "...employees received text messages yesterday announcing tonight (Wednesday) as the last night open. One day’s notice, and there was a crazy insinuation that if more money had been made over the weekend the venue could have been open for another month..." According to a local comedian, who received the foreboding text message, this "about the 15th time there has been a shutdown scare," but at this point it seems like the real thing. [Gothamist]

Relocating your restaurant doesn't always inject it with new life. Sure, it worked for Momofuku, but just take a look at what happened to The Tasting Room this week. We're predicting a similar fate for Steak Frites, Andrew Silverman's Union Square restaurant that he moved down to the Hudson Square Death Zone last November. Consistently a ghost town, the restaurant often has room for last minute parties of 10 at 8 o'clock. Dead giveaway right there that it belongs in the hospice. Another bad sign: executive chef Adam Greenberg left three weeks ago to "pursue other interests", and a replacement has not yet been secured. We really have nothing against you Andy, but we have no choice but to admit your project into the ICU.

The beauty you see before you is the yet to open Cafe Society, located in the old Steak Frites space off Union Square. Note the large silver globe light, the raw ceiling, the back-lit mirrors. And of course there's the lime green/red-orange color palette. It looks like there is still a lot of work to be done, so perhaps we'll give owner Andrew Silverman, who also owns Chat 'n Chew and Steak Frites (newly relocated to Varick St.), the benefit of the doubt that the place won't look truly terrible, or as similar to Mars 2112, by opening night. Make it work Andy.

Viñas by Femia, 11/01/2007
1) Viñas: The owner of Williamsburg's new gym has just opened a beautifully-appointed Latin restaurant and bar right next door. Viñas offers refined-sounding dishes like Andalusian meatballs in garlic-saffron sauce and adobo-rubbed heritage pork chops served with truffled yuca pirao. Fancy. The chef here is Henry Lopez Jr., formerly of Clinton Hill's Luz. 109 South 6th St between Bedford Ave and Berry St, Williamsburg, Brooklyn; (718) 782-2333 [NY Mag]
2) Le Lupanar: Part of a swell of new restaurants and bars that have opened recently on Essex Street is French eatery Le Lupanar. It's popped up on the decidedly uncharming stretch of Essex near the McDonald's, car garage and dirty video store. Some info on the decor, per UrbanDaddy: "The orchid-covered walls are lined with cozy tables for Parisian romance, and there's a communal table in the middle for when you show up plus an entourage or minus a reservation." It's BYOB for now. 103 Essex St between Delancey and Rivington Sts; (212) 260-2036 [Eater Inbox; UrbanDaddy; NY Mag]
3) ChikaLicious Puddin’: Though Room4Dessert is no more, sweets spot ChikaLicious is still going strong. They've just opened an tiny offshoot which offers three prepared desserts to go: brioche bread pudding, apple pudding and, of course, chocolate pudding. 204 E 10th St between First and Second Aves; (212) 475-0929 [Eater Inbox; Zagat]
Hudson Square Dish, this way. >>
When we broke the news last week that venerable off-Union Square eatery Steak Frites would be relocating to 225 Varick Street, we somehow missed adding the exclamation point that 225 Varick Street is, in fact, the home to the late lamented Charolais, Simon Oren's bistro that enjoyed several days of business last summer. When Eater operatives dropped by this morning to survey the scene (above) at the shuttered eatery, we noted work coming along; doesn't look like they'll make too many changes to the decor, which makes sense, as they plan to open within the next week or two. Godspeed, Steak Frites. And with that, we officially conclude The Charolais Chronicles.
A footnote: FloFab offers up the scoop that the original Steak Frites location will not, as we reported, reopen as Steak Frites but rather as something called Cafe Society/CSNY. Memo to owner Andrew Silverman: lawyers for David Crosby et al will be in touch shortly.
