Turns out New York isn't immune from the rash of Starbucks closings planned for 2009. 10 of the 600 scheduled shutters will be in NYC: "When Starbucks released the full list of stores tagged for elimination, it included six in Manhattan, two in Queens and one in Brooklyn. All of those in Manhattan are in Midtown: 340 Madison Avenue (at 44th Street), 400 Madison Avenue (near 48th Street), 1600 Broadway (near 48th Street), 1675 Broadway (near 52nd Street), 565 Fifth Avenue (near 46th Street) and on the fifth floor of Macy’s flagship store in Herald Square." Per the announcement yesterday, the one-size-only Vivannos (The 'Bucks' first foray into non-coffee or tea drinks) made their debut today. A 4 p.m. Eater spot check to the store on Spring and Varick revealed the following: signage completely out of control (all window, door, and chalkboard real estate was devoted to pushing these suckers), a man unsuccessfully hawking the free samples on the street, and a total of five smoothies sold in one half hour. An appraisal: the Chocolate Banana Vivanno had a muddled flavor aptly described by one customer as “interesting." Meanwhile, those crazy kids over at Serious Eats are calling them "not horrible."

Serious Eats brings more news about the new smoothie drinks/last ditch effort at Starbucks, available tomorrow: "The Vivanno will come in two flavors: Orange Mango Banana Blend, made with Naked Juice, protein and fiber powders, milk, and ice, with 227 calories in a grande. In the Banana Chocolate Blend, mocha syrup replaces the juice...Each blend also contains a whole banana..." If whole bananas can't save the company, God help us all. [SE]
