Bar entrepreneur Rob Shamlian checks in via email: "Just an FYI on the Mason Dixon review. I no longer am part of Darkroom. I opened it on August 12, 04 and sold my interest in Jan, 05. Me and my brother only have Fat Baby, Spitzer's and Mason Dixon." Eater regrets intimations otherwise. [~E~]
Yesterday, Eater inspectors arrived on Ludlow Street to ascertain the fate of two long-delayed venues:
1) Spitzer's Corner: This Plywood vet, from the Fat Baby crew, finally soft-opened over the weekend, as reported by The RG. A drop-by last night found the front room, which features two large communal drinking tables, full of revelers. Given its location fronting the very center of Hell Square, this place is going to need some serious crowd-control come next weekend.
2) The Blue Seats: The massive amount of press that this sports bar has gotten before it has managed to open the doors continues to grow. Yesterday's press hit: Andrea Strong's NYPost restaurant wrap announcing that the Blue Seats "opened July 30." As another Eater photo inspection last night indicates—er, not so much. Though crowds are gathering on the stoop! That's gotta be a good sign. Right?
Usually, the Plywood waits until Friday. But this morning, a special Lower East Side correspondent caught the de-wooding of Spitzer's Corner, the delayed opening from the fine folks behind Fat Baby, as it happened. A first glimpse of the interior reveals a surprisingly rustic vibe: rough wood-hewn walls that evoke a cabin in the Maine woods more than a restaurant on the LES's main thoroughfare. But no matter—looks pretty good. Definitely at least a few weeks out on opening, however; let's reset the over/under for Labor Day.
The PLYMANIA tag means only one thing: that we've got a full afternoon of the sweet, sweet Plywood coming your way. Let's get going, shall we?
1) Ludlow Street: What we have here is a camphone sneak peek into The Blue Seats, the sports bar moving into the former Tenement space across from Pianos on Ludlow Street. The photo does not do justice to a bar that's really an audio-video head trip. Though the 300 flatscreen TVs promised in first reports didn't bear out, there's gonna be something like 75 screens when the doors finally open here on July 30. Unboxings glore when Eater inspectors stopped by yesterday. [PLYWOOD/POST-PLYWOOD]
2) Ludlow/Rivington: Above, of course, is Spitzer's Corner, which revealed its glassy side to Rivington Street this week. Per an informant's spyhole peek inside, though, we're still a ways out on what's becoming one of the more entertaining delayed openings of the summer. [PLYWOOD]
3) Delancey Street: Stunning news from a tipster: "Old kfc/taco bell on delancey is not turning into a h&m. Rather it's turning into a popeyes chicken so says the work permits on the window!" Glory days are here again, friends. [PLYWOOD]
