There was a call or two earlier this morning for some news about our favorite chef who never did jail time and yours, Jason Neroni. People, requests we would be pleased to accommodate include this one. First of all, go ahead and rescan the above gallery of Jason Neroni's next project, a market-driven restaurant 10 months delayed at 10 Downing Street. It'll be his first main stage gig since the bottom fell out at Porchetta. Reached via email this morning, not yet on vacation, Neroni's spokesperson Steven Hall updates, "Still no gas there but closer, looks like August opening." Neroni bit number two for you: At this moment, Mr. Neroni is at a wedding in San Francisco.

1) Upper East Side: Above we've got a picture of Fulton, a new restaurant going into a spot on 75th and 3rd. Intel is scarce on this puppy so any tips are welcome. UPDATE: from the tipline: I believe that this is owned by Citarella. I was told months ago by a manager at Citarella that it was going to be a 'Joseph’s like the one that used to be in the theatre district. Perhaps they changed the name?" [PLYWOOD]
2) Lower East Side: And finally we find out what wonderful restaurant will replace the failed Dash Dogs on 127 Rivington. From the tipline: "I just talked to one of the guys sawing/drilling on the place, and a burrito place is going in where dash dogs was on rivington." [PLYWOOD]
3) Harlem: Italian restaurant Ottomanelli’s is opening their sixth location on 1325 Fifth Ave. at 111th St. in Harlem. From the press release: “'Ottomanelli’s will open a restaurant with an outdoor café facing the park on Fifth Avenue,' says Ms. Consolo. 'It will be a brasserie but in the traditional style we have come to expect from this famous company.'" [PLYWOOD]
Fro-yo to the max, ahead.>>1) East Village: Over the weekend we got this note in from a tipster on the progress of the burger shop going into the old Bouche Bar space: "Looks like a new burger spot called Black Iron Burger Shop will be opening up in June on 5th Street between A & B. The place looks like it is going to be very classic looking." [PLYWOOD]
2) East Village: A special East Village correspondent checks in on the much delayed Curry Ya: "...walked past this spot today on 10th bet. 1st and 2nd. nobody to talk to, but looks like it is pretty close to opening. there was a post about it on nymag last year saying it was scheduled for february." [PLYWOOD]
3) Park Slope: From a Slope resident on the soon to open Lookout Hill: "This restaurant is opening in the cursed space that last housed Biscuit BBQ at 230 Fifth Avenue at President Street in Park Slope. Looks like it's almost ready to go." Gowanus Lounge has some further intel on it. [PLYWOOD]
The latest on Kurve and Midtown East, ahead.>>1) Boerum Hill: This tip on new Brooklyn spot Building on Bond: "This place is around the corner from me on the corner of Bond and Pacific in Boerum Hill. Turns out the guys behind this are from Hecho Inc., the restaurant builders and designers. Some of their other projects include Hill Country, Stanton Social, Boqueria, The Tasting Room, August, Spitzer's Corner, Bobo and European union...The name of the place is called 'Building on Bond.' During the day, the front of the place is going to be cafe. For dinner, they're gonna open up the back part for dinner. The cafe is going to open in April. Unclear when the restaurant is opening. They're still trying to get their license from the community liquor board." [PLYWOOD]
2) Cobble Hill: A Brooklyn Life has the news on Cobble Hill pastry shop, Sweet Melissa: "Sweet Melissa is expanding into the space next door and, according to the person at the counter, is planning to open in April. The new space will serve beer and wine (always a good thing). Looking forward to warmer weather, the garden will be expanded to include both building's backyards." [PLYWOOD]
3) West Village: And yet another update on Pichet Ong's almost opened Batch. From WVill corespondent: "Walked by Pichet Ong's new dessert spot, Batch, this afternoon. Caught Ong walking out and asked if I could take a picture inside. 'Saturday,' Ong said, 'Come by Saturday and take as many pictures as you want.' So—UrbanDaddy's report of Batch's Saturday opening this weekend seem to be true." [POST PLYWOOD]
The Old Smoochies Space, Artichoke, SHI, Pinkberry and more, ahead.>>As is so often the case on Friday afternoons, it's time once again for the Plywood Report. Your sightings of yet-to-open establishments to the tipline, please.

1) Central Village: It's not even slated to open until the summer, but (Le) Poisson Rouge at 158 Bleecker Street (at Thompson) is already making quite the impression on the neighborhood. This is the space that previously served as home to the defunct Village Gate. Oh, and it's got over 3,000 friends on MySpace. [PLYWOOD]
2) Midtown East: Bottomless Dish has a nice reveal of the interior design of Savarona, a new Turkish restaurant aiming to open next month at 59th Street and First Avenue. Color: "Chef Tevfik Alparslan hails from Bolu, in the Northwestern part of Turkey, and according to the PR materials, his cuisine bears the Western influences of time spent with Gordon Ramsay." [PLYWOOD]
3) East Village: A tipster updates us on a corner we've become strangely obsessed with: "So the space that used to be GNC and also Subway, on the corner of 14th and 1st Ave. is now being renovated. I asked the guys who own the deli next door and they said 'It will be a restaurant.' Hmm... i guess we'll wait and see." [PLYWOOD]
4) Chinatown: "A new Hong Kong Style Chinese restaurant is under construction at 202 Centre Street," emails a source. "The interior will be anything but the typical Chinese restaurant." Oooh, do tell us more. [PLYWOOD]
The Plywood Report investigates restaurants and bars that are in that phase somewhere between concept and soft open. Your sightings to tips@eater.com, svp.

1) Lower East Side: In reference to the above photo, a quick quiz for Plywood connoisseurs: recognize that space? The red walls are a telling hint. Yep, that's 71 Clinton Street, former home to 71 Clinton Fresh Food. And it certainly appear that, after laying dormant for quite some time, there's activity anew in the space. Anyone know who signed a lease here? [PRE-PLYWOOD]
2) Midtown West: At right, a small glimpse of South Gate, the new Central Park South restaurant from chef Kerry Heffernan (ex-Eleven Madison Park, Mondrian) that's set to open next month. Color commentary, courtesy of The RG, who also supplied the photo: "The mirror-decked front bar with exposed glass bar shelves overlooks the park. Formerly Cafe Botanica, South Gate will be a swanky showcase for Heffernan's American fusion cuisine." [PLYWOOD/POST-PLYWOOD]
3) Williamsburg: We're overdue for the mainstream media to hop on the "Williamsburg is THE new restaurant neighborhood!" story, but while we wait, here's another newcomer from the lens of roving Eater photog Will Femia: Favela, a new Brazilian place coming to the corner of South 5th and Wythe. Click through for photo reveal. [PLYWOOD]
The Plywood Report investigates restaurants and bars that are in that phase somewhere between concept and soft open. Your sightings to tips@eater.com, svp.
1) Upper West Side: Delayed past its initial projection of a "mid-fall 2007" open, chef Ed Brown (ex-Sea Grill et al)'s new restaurant Eighty One is getting close to ready. Emails a tipster, "Ed Brown's new restaurant is probably opening early next week for their soft opening. Waiting on one more permit." A call to the restaurant—described on the official website as "a menu of modern American items... much more than just fish"—finds that they're expecting to open to the public the second week of February. [POST-PLYWOOD]
2) West Village: While Magnolia Bakery preps their new Upper West Side spot for opening tomorrow, there's competition brewing a little ways south. Per Crain's, "This spring will bring a new cupcake bar called Sweet Revenge to 62 Carmine St., between Bedford Street and Seventh Avenue South, in the West Village." (The space previously held defunct record store Vinyl Mania.) Bonus feelgood quote from the owner: "I want to create a fun, fabulous place where life is grand. This is a town that loves its cupcakes, and there's an opportunity to make cupcakes a little more sexy and hip.'" Um, yeah. [PLYWOOD]

3) Long Island City: Finally, courtesy of the excellent newish neighborhood blog LIQCity, word of two new joints coming to the LIC. Above left, on 50th Ave between Vernon and Jackson, comes Ihawan, serving sushi and Asian grill goodies. LIQCity: "Any relation to the Ihawan in Woodside? Seems likely." Above right, also at Vernon-Jackson (but on Jackson), an Asian newcomer that's leaning Japanese called BANY. [PLYWOOD 2X]
Two updates on Plywood Report alums to share this fine afternoon...
1) East Village: We last checked in at La Zarza back in November. A tipster sends along this photo with this note: "I'm a tenant at 166 1st Avenue in the East Village (between 10th/11th) and I just spoke with my landlord about La Zarza, the Argentinian (?) tapas restaurant that's going to be on our ground floor. Apparently they are having their final DoH inspection today [Monday Jan. 7] and if that goes well, the restaurant will open within one to two weeks. There has been a ton of work done there over the past few months since it was a nightclub before and has had to go through the requisite transformation to a restaurant, i.e. putting a kitchen in." [POST-PLYWOOD]
2) South Slope: Word of a newcomer at Third Ave. and 9th Street from the Bar Toto folks hit the Plywood Report back in July. The Feed reveals that it'll be named Bar Tano and open by the end of the month. Color: "The fetching restaurant—TONY's recent visit revealed a 24-foot zinc bar outfitted with a gleaming Cellini tap, and ornate eggshell-painted pressed-tin walls—will focus on Italian small plates and grilled pizzas." [PLYWOOD/POST-PLYWOOD]
What better way to brace for the New Year than by checking in on some of the new restaurants that will grace it. Yes, it's time for the very last Plywood Report of 2007.

1) West Village: Above, what we’re looking at here is Tasca, the Hall-repped, flash-in-the-pan tapas restaurant at the corner of Seventh Ave South and W10th St, and the carcass of Central Kitchen. Word is that the two spaces are going to be combined into a restaurant for former Biltmore Room toque Gary Robins (too, of Russian Tea Room debacle fame). Robins is a capable chef, great at times, per reviews, but if he thinks his haute price point and food is going to work on this block, Kamali is going to get this venue back in six months. [PRE-PLYWOOD]
2) West Village: At right, Sweetiepie, on Greenwich Ave. (between Christopher/W10th St.) Seems self-explanatory at present, though it bears noting that the restaurant had applied for a liquor license at this address, as we reported awhile back. Possibly of import: Murray Rubin's Birdbath is two blocks away on Waverly and Seventh, Jack's coffee is half a block around the corner on W10th, and Joe is three blocks South on Gay and Waverly. And none are closer than Lafayette French Pastry, a long-time fixture across the street at 26 Greenwich. So, this isn't a neighborhood in need of coffee and cakes, but a good cupcake could make for an interesting show." [PLYWOOD]
3) West Village: A tipster emails, "A new dessert restaurant of some sort going in the old lilac chocolates space at 120 christopher. i live in the building above and spoke to the woman locking up the other night as she was leaving...she said they're hoping to open in january...looks like they've got dark gray slate or tile down on the floors, the lower half of the walls, and as facing on a bar or counter to the left of the doorway...upper parts of the walls are still plywood...they also noisely installed a huge new exhaust system in the alley right underneath my window, but i digress." [PLYWOOD]
4) Upper East Side: 78th and 2nd reports, "The boards came down at the former spot of First Wok on 78th and 3rd on Sunday, and something called Liz Kelsey has set up shop." Hmmm. [PLYWOOD]
Ahead: a Brooklyn two-pack from Dumbo to Park Slope. >>
Dept. of Buildings permits still adorn the windows, but not for much longer.
As Eater reported yesterday, the first-floor annex room at Peter Luger Steakhouse—a room that's been under construction for the better part of the last five years—appears ready to open at last. Eater operatives dropped by last night and were allowed to peek into the room. New details: the room seats 50-to-60 patrons; the room has its own unisex, handicapped-accessible bathroom; the construction of said bathroom added to the project's delays; and said bathroom is close enough to one particular table that eaters at that table will enjoy quite the view. Meantime, the upstairs dining room—longtime Luger Siberia—will indeed close, but may enjoy new life as walls are ripped down to grow the space, which might be used as a private events space.
Oh, care for a look at the new digs? Right this way. >>
Above, the shuttered Sascha space on Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District, its signs still swaying sadly in the fading light of a snowy Friday afternoon. But lo! Inside, work is well underway on chef Marcus Samuelsson's forthcoming Merkato. (Good thing, insofar as initial plans called for a September opening.) Per FloFab back in June, "The name is that of the largest food market in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. He will offer his interpretation of dishes from all over Africa, with forays into Brazil and the Caribbean."
And to emphasize that, he's got quite a mural underway, as we saw this afternoon. >>
And so the cycle of rebirth begins anew on Smith Street. A highly placed correspondent writes, "Another restaurant may open very soon in the recently shuttered Porchetta/Carniceria space on Smith Street. Evidence, as seen last night: The 'Available' signs have been taken down, the windows are now covered with newspapers, the Carniceria signage has been removed (exposing the Porchetta signange), it looks like someone is repainting part of the exterior, and when I peeked in, I saw tables all set up and ready to go (napkins folded, glassware in place). I'm assuming that the place is in pretty good shape, being that it hasn't been closed for too long, so we may be talking a matter of days here. No idea who the new tenant is. Exciting." Who can tell us more? [PLYWOOD/POST-PLYWOOD]
UPDATE: A neighborhood tipster tells us, "I hear a strong rumor that Saul Bolton (of Restaurant Saul) has bought out the place." However, a call to Saul just a ways down Smith Street yields this response: "I'd say that sounds like an insane rumor." Full denial, in other words. Anyone else?

1) East Village: A tipster emails along the above photo with this note: "I wrote several months ago about a conversation I'd had with my landlord about a new restaurant in my building, right across 1st Ave from soon-to-be Momofuku Ko. The space was formerly a club that failed so they have to build a brand new kitchen in the bottom floor (the space is actually two legitimate floors). The awning went up two days ago and the place is called Zarza. I talked to the contractor today. He says it'll open December 15th. He also confirmed it would be tapas." [PLYWOOD]
2) Upper West Side: Look, the people want tapas, and the restaurateurs are going to keep giving it to them. From another tipster: "I was walking home from the gym last night and saw what looked like a new restaurant on 94th between Broadway and Amsterdam. The sign said Vins Tapas and although boxes were everywhere inside it looked pretty close to opening. It's right next to Jazz on the City, a local hostel, and across from what I think is a crack house. So good luck to the owners." [PLYWOOD]
3) MePa: Guest of a Guest reports that bottle service club Kiss and Fly will be opening in a few weeks in the old Aer Lounge digs. Color: "Meat Packing? Yes, we know what you’re thinking, it wouldn’t have been our first choice either. But we have faith in [bottle service host] Randy Scott. His track record has no blemishes, and he seems to strike gold everywhere he goes." [PLYWOOD]
Ahead: a fresh look inside the midtown Pop Burger, and Boerum Hill 'wood. >>
Zooming in way under the radar is Remedy Diner, the new, uh, diner that's been colonizing the large space on the corner of Houston and Norfolk Streets previously occupied by Petrosino (and whatever the hell the name of that craptastic spinoff was that they opened next door) since mid-summer. Since the shuttering of LoSide over a year ago, the neighborhood has lacked for an upscale-yet-downscale diner with a genuine diner vibe, and that looks to be exactly what Remedy aims to be. The interior decor is impressive, but the low-grade temporary signage (above) and perplexing choice of purple for the exterior brickwork does give one pause. Still, we're feeling this place. Sort of. Maybe?
Two photographs of the interior, straight ahead. >>Since it is the fall of wine bar openings, let's return to this well for this Plywood Report. As always, plywood sightings, photos, and questions to tips@eater.com.
1) Upper East Side: A tipster emails along the photo at right, visual proof that, as our tipster puts it, "New wine bar coming to the UES on 64th and 1st Ave. So, yes, Felice, as previously reported by Eater. [PLYWOOD]
2) Upper West Side: Twin reader reports: a) "Ending speculation posted on Eater months ago, the long-plywooded space on the south side of West 72nd between Columbus and CPW, next to Beach Bum Tanning, will indeed be a wine bar—signage went up today proclaiming that 'Reposo 72 Wine Bar is Coming Soon.'" b) "awning up on 72nd [cpw/col] for riposo 72. haven't check but i assume it's related to the italian wine bar riposo 46." A call to the Riposo 46 confirms same, and reveals that the expected opening date here is the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. [PLYWOOD]
3) Upper West Side: What would a wine bar update be without another check-in on Daniel Boulud's forthcoming Bar Boulud on Broadway and 63rd? "Around the first of the year," an insider whispers in our general direction. Boulud regulars should expect to be among those invited by for friends and family week, too. [PLYWOOD]

1) Midtown East: We begin on Lexington Avenue between 45th and 46th, where Zen Burger—a vegetarian offering from the recently beleaguered Zen Palate folks—is prepping to open by month's end. Above, via Midtown Lunch, a glimpse at the interior. ML: "It’s a lot more McDonalds’ish than I expected (down to the photos on the overhead menu, which don’t look like veggie burgers to me)." [PLYWOOD]
2) East Village: At right, more or less across the street from Back Forty on Avenue B, we see the interior of the restaurant that used to be Uovo and is set to become La Scarpetta. A tipster filed this update with us a month ago: "I heard a new Italian restaurant is opening up in Uovo's old location on 11th Street & Avenue B in the East Village. I asked chef Pasquale Martinelli, formerly of Bellavitae in the West Village, what the name means. Apparently, La Scarpetta is when you clean your plate with a piece of bread. I passed by two weeks ago and it looked like they were having some kind of friends/family party. The beautiful glassware struck my attention. I'm pretty excited for its opening. Do you have any info?" Bottomless Dish kicked the tires recently; liquor license issues are holding up the open. Given that Uovo owner Matthew Hamilton famously blamed the SLA for his shutter, that's something you do hate to see. [POST-PLYWOOD]
Mea culpa, kids. As several Eater commenters observed, our misgivings about the establishment set to open in the former Varietal space on West 25th Street, one Rock-n-Sake by name, perhaps were overly hasty. Sayeth one commenter,
Look for good things here from Rock N Sake. These guys were washed out of New Orleans by Katrina and came north to find a new home. They now have a restuarant in downtown Port Washington and are now ready to take the plunge in Manhattan. If they can duplicate what they do on West 25th Street they are certain to be a hit with the hip and not so hip sushi lovers. They put the P in Presentation and the wait staff was always smiling while attending to their customers. Best of luck guys we look forward the grand opening.Shill or not, it is a fact that the Rock-n-Sake guys did indeed decamp from New Orleans post-Katrina, and that the reviews of their Long Island outpost have indeed been positive. So, an opening to keep an eye on, and for reasons beyond the cuisine; per one review, "The bathroom features projected movies on the floor to keep you entertained when nature calls." Community Board 4 will hear the application to transfer the liquor license to the new guys next week.
This afternoon's Plywood Report shall hearken back to the glory days and exclusively focus on the Below 14th environment. Sightings from all neighborhoods, however, are welcome to tips@eater.com. We thank you.

1) Nolita: Emails a tipster, "Barmarché in Nolita (14 Spring St. at Elizabeth St.) is out for renovations. Perhaps temporary, perhaps otherwise." Eater operatives dropped by the scene earlier today and took the above photographs; a peek through a pulled-aside curtain seems to indicate this isn't anything major. Updates as events warrant. [TEMPORARY PLYWOOD]
2) West Village: Says another tipster, "Any idea what the new spot is that’s going in at 38 8th Ave in the West Village? Right next to Lilac Chocolate shop? Saw lots of activity the past few days in the tiny space that’s been rather nicely remodeled." Intel welcome. [PLYWOOD]
3) Central Village: A tipster emails the photo at right with this note: "Any early intel on Tong on 13th near University Place? This neighborhood already has plenty of Thai, but this will be our first Thai 'brasserie.'" [PLYWOOD]
4) East Village: Vanishing New York reports that in the space that held the long-shuttered First Avenue legend Jade Mountain, there are signs of life. Confirmed: "It's going to be a restaurant." [PLYWOOD]
5) East Village: Finally, good news for people who love chain establishments. Per CoStar's report, "The national soup and sandwich franchise, The Original SoupMan and 1,400-store ice cream franchise, Cold Stone Creamery are teaming up to open a new, co-branded store format in New York City. Located at 2 Astor Place in New York, the first Original SoupMan/Cold Stone Creamery store will celebrate its grand opening in early November." [PLYWOOD]

By the time nightlife impressario Ivan Kane pulled the plug on his bar/burlesque performance space concept, Forty Deuce, in Nolita last month, work had been underway in the massive space since early in the summer. How far did Mr. Kane get before the community handed him its stop-work order? By way of a special tipster, today we find out.
Come, step further inside Forty Deuce. >>Once again, it's time for the Plywood Report, Eater's regular roundup of restaurants and bars preparing to open around town. Seen something new in your neighborhood? The tipline, tips@eater.com, eagerly awaits your call.

1) Upper East Side: Following the note passed our way by the former owner of DTUT that he was, in fact, not re-opening his establishment, several Eater readers check in with definitive correspondence on what's to come in the space. Emails one, "New signs have been posted in DTUT's windows and it has nothing to do with DTUT unfortunately. 'Coming soon: Café Notte, a fun neighborhood café with some exciting surprises ahead' or something of the sorts. The e-mail address for more info is listed at cafenotte@salsberggroup.com. I checked out the Salsberg Group website,
and they seem to be a bunch of caterers. So who knows. In my last tip, I mentioned that the inside of DTUT, furniture, fixtures etc were virtually untouched. I regretfully now retract that statement, as most everything is being trashed. The odwalla coolers are now off and empty. The shelves on the wall are gone, and the counter is cleared. Full trashbags are laying around and slowly the place is emptying. I guess we will see what happens." [PLYWOOD]
2) Upper East Side: The fun never stops on the Upper East Side. Proof: neighborhood blogger 78th and 2nd reports that Big Daddy's Diner is moving into the old Penang spot on 83rd and Second. Forecast: "They have great tater tots and will be giving Jackson Hole and Peter's a run for their money!" As we said: party. never. stops. [PLYWOOD]
3) East Village: Emails an Eater correspondent, "Spotted this ply at the corner of Second St and First Ave last night (right). The space looks pretty nice -- I'm assuming it's going to be a restaurant." Additional reconnaissance reveals that we've got a new pizza joint on our hands. Praise the Lord. [PLYWOOD]
4) Chelsea: Here's a bit of a mystery, courtesy of a tipster: "9th ave b/w 18/19th st... Hole in the wall chinese closed...unknown restaurant opening...looks close to done ....brick walls...wide to the street doors." [PLYWOOD]
Ahead: It's all Williamsburg, all the time with a 'Burg Plywood three-pack! >>And now, your Friday afternoon Plywood. Your sightings to tips@eater.com.

1) Washington Heights: Let's start way up at the top of Manhattan, as a tipster sends the above photo and this intel: "Snapped this at the corner of 181st and Ft Washington Ave. It's the old Hilltop Restaurant space. Hilltop was shuttered a few months ago after getting a DOH score somewhere in the low 160s (at the time, one of the two or three worst in all of NYC). In fact, you can still see remnants of the DOH tag in the window. No other indications of what it will be/when it will open. But with The Archway and Billy's Original BBQ having shuttered in the last year, we'll take any new restaurant we can up here." [PLYWOOD]
2) Upper West Side: A mystery! Per a tipster, "Anyone know what is going in on the west side of Broadway between 92 & 93? Looks to be a restaurant and is only 1/2 plywooded." [PLYWOOD]
3) Gramurray: "On Park Ave. So., the progress on the transplanted Park Bistro (now on Park Ave. So. between 26th and 27th) is moving slowly. They finally removed the 'coming in July' portion of their sign. I got a glimpse in and the space is long and narrow with very high ceilings and perhaps a lofted private dining area. The drywall looks to be done, but that is about it." [PLYWOOD]
4) Williamsburg: And finally, a strange situation on the other side of the East River: "Was walking down Bedford Ave this morning and noticed that the excellent sushi shop Mizu (which has an branch in the Flatiron district 20thbtw broadway and park ave south, I think) is opening up btw n6 and n7th finally some real sushi in Williamsburg and more asian for asian row!" A call to the Flatiron Mizu, however, reveals that the mothership knows nothing about this Mizu upstart. Developing... [PLYWOOD]
