Adventures in Shilling #031: THOR, Country, Highbar, Agave

It's time for another edition of Adventures in Shilling, in which we fight shilling the best way we can, by shaming tasteless, unscrupulous shills into submission. Well, that's the plan, at least. Fight shills yourself by dropping offensive links to tips@eater.com

2008_06_thor.jpgThe shills haven't been as ubiquitous this week, so perhaps the restaurant PR folk are taking a vacay during Shitshow Week. Sadly, there were still a few suspect comments left here, in the inbox, and on Citysearch, and we feel it's our duty to expose them.

Man, we hate to do this to you Geoffrey, but the commenters brought our attention to this possibly shilly comment: "I must totally disagree with many of the comments made by these people on Country. I have eaten there a few times and last week had lunch there. The service was fantastic. The food was exquistely prepared. The chef came out to the table to explain where he gets his food from. The wine list has been totally overhauled. Not only was our selection fantastic, but it also made for great reading until our meals came. Over all it was so nice I will definately be back, probably this week."
Shill Probability: 29%

The following Citysearch comment is a suspect shill because it's the commenter's first review ever and it's a bit on the rosy side: "I went to the High Bar outdoor patio on a Wednesday night after work for drinks. The ambiance was incredible. I can't imagine a better place on a sunny day. I fear that as more people get wind of High Bar, it will be impossible to get in the door and will be a much more high strung crowd. *Sigh*...It was a relatively young and mixed crowd, suits and hipsters alike. The drinks are expensive. The cocktails are around $16 and come in plastic high ball glasses.
Shill Probability: 45%

Eater Sneak Preview: Highbar

Highbar, one of the city's newest rooftop lounges, opened last night for a friends and family preview before their official opening next week, and we have to say it has a pretty sweet setup. Great views, a modern design, plenty of cushioned seating (including private beds), and a grill for burgers all make it a great summer night spot. And the fact that Greg Brier of D’Or, and Amalia is behind it means these kids know what they're doing.

But there's a catch. The level of douchiness will undoubtedly be an issue the second it opens (in 9 days) and will reach unbearable heights by mid-June. However, Brier has said he is trying his damnedest to attract industry types with special parties and discounts. But no matter what he does, the location off Times Square (at 48th and 8th) means all kinds of be-suited office types will be cramming in for their $18 cocktails (and helping Brier pay his rent, natch). Our thinking is, if you are invited to a party here, go. Otherwise, don't say we didn't warn you.
