EaterWire: Shutters in Midtown and BK, Eleven Madison Park Joins the Club, and Free Pizza

2008_11_twoboots.jpgSHUTTERSVILLE— We have three big shutter reports coming in all on one day. First, Midtown Lunch reports that both Shophie's Cuban on 40th between 7th and 8th and Two Boots in Rock Center are closing. Luckily both chains have other successful locations. Meanwhile Grub street breaks the news that Cobble Hill's Trout is doneski, as are Jim Mamary's plans for an oyster bar. [ML; GS]

EaterWire: Top Chef Tasting, Free Chipotle, Iuzzini Update, and More

2008_10_chipotle.jpgTOP CHEFFAGE— Life Vicarious attends the Top Chef Taste of the 5 Boroughs Publicity Stunt/Charity Event at Grand Central today and comes back with the following notes: food was good and was, for the most part, abundant (Le Cirque ran out by 1 p.m.), a number of pseudo celebs were spotted, and last season's contestant Andrew put on quite a show. "...he started supreming fruit before carving into his finger, began bleeding, turned to the demo sinks disappointed to discover they're just props, was first handed paper towels, then a bandage, then finally left the stage as an EMT arrived..." [LV]

MIDTOWN— Mr. Cutlets reports that pastry chef Nicole Kaplan (formerly of Eleven Madison Park and Del Posto) was let go from the Plaza as a cost cutting measure. [TFB]

EaterWire: Monkey Bar Sold, Dallas BBQ DOH'd, Cake Man Raven Robbed, and More!

2008_08_dohdallas.jpgMIDTOWN— Cutlets brings the news that the ill-fated Monkey Bar has been sold by its owners the Glazier Group. There's no word yet on who they've sold it to or what the new owners will do with the restaurant, but we can't say we're all that surprised at the move. Place was always a ghost town. [Cutlets]

UPPER WEST SIDE— A recent DOH'ing on west 72nd Street, and it's a non-shocker: Dallas BBQ. According to their signage, there is an issue of broken pipes, but we've all heard that one before. [EaterWire]

FORT GREENE— Some bad Crimewatch news from Cake Man Raven, courtesy of the police blotter: "First, disgruntled employees charged the famous Fulton Street baker owed them $500,000 in unpaid wages, then hoodlums burglarized his shop overnight on July 27....The thief had taken $250, a flat screen television and the home theater system, all of which were there when the bakery closed at 10:30 pm." Free Food Frenzy: Line at Fresco To Go Longer than Apple Store

2008_07_fresco.jpg

Holy moly. This is the scene right now at the soon-to-open Fresco to Go in FiDi. They announced they would be giving away free samples today from 11:30 - 1, and the downtown office workers got the memo. That line wraps around the block. Just goes to show how desperate the dining situation is downtown.
