Who Goes There? Fedora Restaurant

This is the second edition of Who Goes There? a new regular feature in which Lost City's Brooks of Sheffield cracks the doors on mysteriously enduring Gotham restaurants—unsung, curious neighborhood mainstays with the dusty, forgotten, determined look—to learn secrets of longevity and find out, who goes there?

I was the only person nobody knew on a recent evening at Fedora Restaurant, the West Village fixture that exists in a time warp all its own, down a shallow slight of steps from the West 4th Street sidewalk. I was also the only patron under 50. I was not, however, the only man. In fact, aside from the sprightly, nearly-ninety Fedora Dorato—who owns the restaurant and still makes all the food—it was ALL men, Stonewall-era veterans sitting in parties of one or two, talking across the small room with each other about politics, the weather, their recent operations and what longtime local business the real estate market had just crushed.
