Fall Tracking Report: Kefi

2008_11_kefitracking.jpg

2007_09_efp.jpgKefi, 505 Columbus Ave.,
Initial Projection: Late July
Current Debut Projection: 2 - 3 Weeks
Odds, On Time Arrival: 3-1
Eater Projected Opening Date: 12/18/08

A new location for Michael Psilakis' and Donatella Arpaia's Upper West side spot Kefi has been in the works since early March. At first, they predicted it would be a quick reno, that the transition could be made by July. The summer came and went with no word on the new spot or, for that matter, the new restaurant set the open in the old Kefi space.

Initial Projection: September
Current Debut Projection: "Two weeks"
Odds, On Time Arrival: 2-1
Eater Projected Opening Date: 12/08/08

Just a short note on this one: we got word this week that the team from Employees Only are about two weeks out from opening their long awaited new project Macao Trading Co., a huge bi-level family style Macanese spot in Tribeca. A walk by confirms that the place is currently abuzz with activity (but employees are none too welcoming to curious passersby with cameras). Stay tuned for plywood and big reveal shots when the place closes in on the final opening.

Fall Tracking Curiosities: Tribeca's Trigo

Tribeca: Above, take a little look-see at one of the more curious fall openings we've come across: the city's newest medieval dining hall, Trigo. We kid. As one can obviously see from the massive size, the tile floors, chandeliers, and that ironwork, it's actually a "Mediterranean-inspired brasserie." As for the menu, they'll be serving up giant turkey legs, mead, "accessible Mediterranean-influenced dishes prepared with market-driven ingredients." It's about two weeks out.

Trigo, 268 West Broadway, Tribeca; 212-925-1600. Current Projection: End of November, website.

Fall Tracking Report: Gourmet Party Scheduled for Shang

2008_11_shang.jpg

2007_09_efp.jpgShang, 190 Allen St.,
Initial Projection: Fashion Week
Last Projection Projection: 11/7/08
Current Debut Projection: After the 17th
Odds, On Time Arrival: Even
Eater Projected Opening Date: 11/20/08

Lower East Side: Last we checked in with Susur Lee's highly anticipated fall arrival Shang, they had slapped the place together in time for a party for Madonna but had no floor work done, were waiting on furniture, and weren't projected to open until the now quickly approaching November 7th. But apparently the Friday projection may have been premature.

Fall Tracking Report: Ex-360 Space in Red Hook

2008_10_360wire_a.jpg

2007_09_efp.jpgName TK, 360 Van Brunt Street, Red Hook
Initial Projection: September
Current Debut Projection: November
Odds, On Time Arrival: 4-1
Eater Projected Opening Date: 11/24/08

If the Twitter stream (above) of NewYorkology's Amy Langfield is to be believed—and we see little reason that it should not—there's finally action underway at the late lamented 360 space on Red Hook's main drag, Van Brunt Street. Back in July, blogger Lost City broke the news that a new Italian restaurant was slated for the space, apparently to be run by an alum of Smith Street stalwart Patois. Since then, however, details have been scant—and work on the space nonexistent.

Checking in with a special Eater operative in Red Hook this afternoon, though, confirms that work has been underway for about a week, and that, with tables already restored (they'd cleared it out after 360 closed), "The place looks like a restaurant again." Given that we're not expecting an epic renovation here, here's guessing they can get the doors open in about a month's time. Meantime, we await the big reveal on the joint's name. Intel to tips@eater.com, if you're in the know.

Fall Tracking Report: Table 8

2007_09_efp.jpgTable 8, 25 Cooper Sqaure
Initial Projection: Mid '08
Current Debut Projection: Beginning of December
Odds, On Time Arrival: 2-1
Eater Projected Opening Date: 12/15/08

All last fall and winter the community and the developers of the Cooper Square Hotel battled it out over the hotel's proposed nightlife plans for the Bowery. The whole ordeal is chronicled here, here, and here, but here's the basic outcome: in the end the hotel was allowed to have two bars and restaurant (588 heads at any given moment) but agreed to some crushing closing times (8 - 1 a.m. depending on the day/space) and promised to have no music. Now that that's all said and done, the project has been moving forward and the powers that be hope to open this puppy up by the holiday season. Now here's the part of the project that we care about: Table 8 from LA heartthrob chef Govind Armstrong.

For part two of our walk through of the forthcoming Susur Lee restaurant in the LES Thompson, Shang, we take a look into the main dining room and have a chat with the chef himself:

Fall Tracking Report: The Shang Walk Through, Pt. 1

2007_09_efp.jpgShang, 190 Allen St.,
Initial Projection: Fashion Week
Current Debut Projection: The latest from PR reps, "Three weeks"
Odds, On Time Arrival: Even
Eater Projected Opening Date: 11/07/08

Lower East Side: We may say a lot of things are the biggest openings of the fall (Shake Shack for one, the whole Bouley empire, etc.), but the arrival of Toronto's famed Susur Lee is something that veterans of the food scene both here and in Canada are no question looking forward to. His new restaurant Shang in the newly opened Thompson LES is scheduled to open in approximately three weeks, but to get a sense of what's in store we got a little walk through and had a chat with Chef Lee.

Fall Tracking Report Blockbuster Special: The Shake Shack UWS Walk-Through, Pt. 2

Earlier today, we took a preview walk through of one of the biggest openings of the fall, Shake Shack UWS. Part one of our tour is here. Click through for a look at the kitchen, the wine list, the burgers.

Initial Projection: October
Current Debut Projection: The latest from USHG, "Mid-October"
Odds, On Time Arrival: 2-1
Eater Projected Opening Date: 10/25/08

Take a gander, if you will, at the soon-to-be-unveiled glory that is the Upper West Side Shake Shack. We took a little preview walk through today, as did Sir Danny Meyer and his fam, and we have to say she's looking pretty good. And the burgers: oh they traveled well. But let's start the tour at the beginning.

Fall Tracking Report: L'Artusi

2008_10_atrusi.jpg

2007_09_efp.jpgL'Artusi, 228 West 10th St.
Initial Projection: November
Current Debut Projection: November
Odds, On Time Arrival: 2-1
Eater Projected Opening Date: 12/4/08

Flo Fab dropped the news today that the team behind dell'anima had finally chosen a name for its new restaurant in the La Maremma space, L'Artusi. Co-owner Joe Campanale tells us the place is still heavily into its construction phase (confirmed by the above shot) and both the plans for the space and the menu have yet to be tied down. However he does tell us this: we won't be able to recognize the Maremma space when they're done with it.

Fall Tracking Report: SHO Shaun Hergatt

2007_09_efp.jpgSHO Shaun Hergatt, 40 Broad St., 2nd Fl; 212-809-3993
Initial Projection: Late October
Current Debut Projection: Mid-December
Odds, On Time Arrival: 2-1
Eater Projected Opening Date: 12/20/08

We turn our attention to Fidi's biggest fall opening, besides Todd English's already breathing Libertine—SHO Shaun Hergatt. Located on the second floor of the new Setai condo on 40 Broad St., the expansive restaurant will be the first NYC solo effort by Gabriel Kreuther's former deputy at Atelier, Shaun Hergatt, and will be a follow up to his restaurant at South Beach's Setai. The opening will be a test of how such an ambitious project—the space is 12,500 square feet and will feature white tablecloths, a "structured" menu— can survive in this shitshow of an economic climate.

Fall Tracking Report: Following the September Openings

Fall is a time for restaurant openings. Lots of them. Restaurateurs will make promises, excite us, with their grand plans. Consider this here the intel you need to keep abreast of it all—and start obsessing at just the right moment.

2007_09_efp.jpgBack in the beginning of September, we mapped 20 of the most important fall opening scheduled for a Sept. debut date. Since this is the season for mismanaging expectations, of course many of these restaurants (13 out of 20) did not hit their target. To keep us all on the same page, a brief update on which places are open, which will open soon, and which are indefinitely delayed:

Opened in Sept:
508, 9/29/08
Archipelago, 9/24/08
Bloomingdale Road, 9/08/08
Double Crown, 9/15/08
The Libertine, 9/08/08
No. 7, 9/08/08
Porchetta, 9/22/08

Initial Projection: October
Current Debut Projection: The latest from USHG, "Mid-October"
Odds, On Time Arrival: 2-1
Eater Projected Opening Date: 10/25/08

After our Friday Fall Tracking Report on the Upper West Side Shake Shack, we learned some vital new info from managing partner Randy Garutti. Let's just say a root beer tap, a "C" line, and something called the Shake Shiraz are involved. We'll break it down:
