Calexico, Soho's (and now Park Ave.'s) wildly popular burrito and quesadilla truck beat out four other savory carts to take home the top award at this year's Vendy Awards, the annual celebration of the best of New York City street food, this Saturday. Kwik Meal, Midtown's halal chicken truck run by a former sous chef at the Russian Tea Room grabbed the runner-up spot, and Biryani, a Midtown Indian cart, took home the people's choice. Meanwhile the Treats Truck defeated the Dessert Truck and Van Leeuwen ice cream for the dessert title (with Wafels + Dinges noticeably absent). Beyond the results, a little color from the event:
What will the ice cream truck do this winter??>>
Two days ago, Bobby Flay and Jerome Chang taped an episode of Flay's Food Network Show, Throwdown, in Union Square. Yesterday, following the very public display on Tuesday, we debated running a spoiler for the show (it airs later this year). We even put the matter to a vote. 66% of voters said we should do the reveal, while one commenter pointed out that in doing so we ruin the show. (Note that this issue doesn't exist with, say, Top Chef, where the entire show is a glorious pigfuck and therefore entertaining all the way through. We are firmly committed to spoiling the daylights out of that show.)
Which brings us to today and gets casual readers of this space up to speed. We promise not to drag this out much longer, especially because it does seem that Eater readers want us to reveal the winner of the Throwdown. But before we do wrap this up, you should hear DessertTruck owner and Flay opponent Jerome Chang's opinion. Perhaps it will sway your vote. Dude emailed us this morning:
Continue reading "Throwdown Spoiler Debate, Day 2: Jerome Chang of Dessert Truck Weighs In"And the Dessert Truck Bobby Flay Throwdown in Union Square Park has begun. While the Food Network crew tried to divert attention away from the Throwdown by parking a truck with Red Hook signage next to Dessert Truck, no one was fooled (that truck was covered up and driven away right before the taping). At 2 p.m. a line of about 50 or so fans waiting to be part of the filming crowded the cordoned off area. By 2:45, when filming began, the crowd had grown to 75-100, including confused onlookers.
To the filming>>Speaking of Flay, there's a possibility he's doing a Throwdown with the Dessert Truck. The Food Network announced that the shoot next week is for a special called "Food Roadies," but the owners aren't so sure: "For what its worth, Jerome and I highly suspect that we are going on *Bobby Flay Throwdown* and the new special thing is a sham. However, we won’t know until the day of the shoot." [ML]
It's time for another edition of Adventures in Shilling, in which we fight shilling the best way we can, by shaming tasteless, unscrupulous shills into submission. Well, that's the plan, at least. Fight shills yourself by dropping offensive links to tips@eater.com
This week we have quite a number of shills from the Eater comments, but the highlight comes from Midtown Lunch. The valiant Zach Brooks is in the middle of an all out commenting war with an accused reverse shiller, and things are heating up. But first, to the small fries:
This short little comment following the announcement that Country Steak would open in March '09 along with the Carleton Hotel could just be from a fan of the hotel. But it just doesn't seem to fit: "I think it makes sense to launch the two at the same time and whatever they decide to do, The Carlton is a fabulous hotel!"F13, Lulu, and the war!>>
Shill Probability: 32%We've got a couple of shills for new coffee shop D'espresso, one from a first time commenter, another made anonymously: "D'Espresso is really a great place to grab a coffee or something delicious to eat. I love the atmosphere and the employees were very sweet. Highly recommend!!"
Shill Probability: 68%

The battle of the dessert trucks continue, now in Midtown on 46th St. We knew both the Treats Truck and the Wafels & Dinges truck were making stops in the office worker nexus, but we didn't know they'd be parked back-to-back. We suggest Van Leeuwen, Dessert Truck, and Waffle 4 U get in on the action to form a veritable dessert truck district and/or form alliances and wage a full on war.

· Waffle Wars: Fighting Words from Spinoff Truck [~E~]
Spotted last night: the new gourmet Van Leeuwen ice cream truck on 12th and University, just four blocks north of Dessert Truck's usual spot. And according to this shot, Dessert Truck has been battling it out on other nights in Astor Place with the Imposter Waffle Truck. We officially declare that there are too many dessert-centric trucks downtown. [EaterWire]
Midtown Lunchers have one more thing to be thankful for this summer: Dessert Truck. "...the Dessert Truck spends Tuesday-Sunday nights on University Place & 8th St., but once the weather gets warmer, Co-owner Chris Chen told me they are hoping to park the truck during the day in wait for it wait for it Midtown." [Midtown Lunch]
Two years ago, your dining options around in the NYU zone of 8th Street between University and Broadway were fairly limited. You had a Johnny Rockets, a Subway, a Chipotle, and a slice joint. Yet six new establishments, the majority of them chains, have opened on that one block since May '06. And another is opening Friday. We decided to stop by the area to see what's been going on. All the new developments, from University to Broadway:
1) Dessert Truck: Located on the southeast corner of 8th St. and University, Dessert Truck launched October '07. Desserts, food trucks, and living in the Weinstein dorm has never been the same since
2) Dallas BBQ: This location of the substandard barbecue chain was often packed with NYU kids using fake IDs to drink half priced margaritas. It shuttered in the summer of '07. It will be replaced by a bank, naturally.
3) Australian Homemade: The brand spanking new addition to the street, and the umpteenth chain, Australian homemade will open their second NYC branch on Friday much to the dismay of the nearby Tastee D-Lite.
4) Crumbs: This outpost of the UWS cupcake giant Crumbs opened on 8th Street in January 2007 and competes for the sweet tooth dollars with Dessert Truck.
Rickshaw, Maoz, and more, ahead.>>
DESSERT TRUCK—From the inbox, a message from the owners of the Dessert Truck, announcing their intent to start running weekly specials (this week: rum and brown butter cake). What's more intriguing though, other than the fact that they're pimping themselves to both Eater and Cutty, is their appeal to the public: "In the upcoming weeks, we welcome any suggestions from customers for what they'd want to see on the menu, and would also welcome collaborations with any chefs and cooks." Pichet Ong-inspired Stilton souflee, anyone? [Eater Inbox]
TREATS TRUCK—Just hours after our note from the Dessert Truck, we have a little news from its main rival in the Mobile Sugar Wars, the roving Treats Truck. Their announcement, while not as sweet, deserves mention: "The Treats Truck will have a $15 Be My Valentine box featuring a brownie, The Treats Truck's signature caramel crème sandwich cookies, and assorted heart-shaped cookies, and will also offer a $6 Hearts & Dots goodie bag, stuffed with junior heart-shaped cookies, chocolate sandwich cookies, and Sugar Dots." [Eater Inbox]
CENTRAL VILLAGE—From the official website of the new answer to pain and destruction in the world, comes this: "We are ramping up production this week so we can satisfy all of our customers. We appreciate all the support we've gotten so far. In addition, we are modifying our hours. We will open at the same times but instead will only stay open until we're sold out of most items. Finally, we are looking to hire a few part-time employees to help us during service. If interested, send us an email." [DessertTruck.com]
MIDTOWN—Not to be outdone by the rolling dessert newcomer downtown, the Treats Truck checks in with its November newsletter: "In November, The Treats Truck plans to continue its five-day schedule, which can be found at http://www.treatstruck.com or by calling (212) 691-5226 for the exact sweet spot." Today and Thursday: 38th and 5th. Rawr. [TreatsTruck.com]
CENTRAL VILLAGE—Inhale, people. Exhale. Okay. Now, the news, via the emerging center of our universe that is DessertTruck.com: "CHANGE OF HOURS THIS WEEKEND: Due to unforeseen high demand tonight, we are going to open at 6PM on Saturday [instead of, as previously scheduled, 12pm]. Depending on how high demand is on Saturday, we may open later than usual on Sunday as well. Don't worry, we've been working through the night to bring you delicious desserts. Thanks for all of your support, and please check the website for the latest news." [DessertTruck.com]
Let's close out the week with a final taste of EaterWire. As ever, your sage observations, juicy gossip and random rants to tips@eater.com.
LOWER EAST SIDE—Word of this has been circulating for a few weeks, but Brooklyn Vegan confirms that 200 Orchard's liquor license issues may force its closure. (These are the same owners now operating Sixth Ward in the old Core 191 space). There's an online petition to sign, if that's your thing. [Brooklyn Vegan, Petition]
CARROLL GARDENS—Neighborhood favorite Lucali Brick Oven pizzeria has closed temporarily for renovations. It reopens next Thursday, November 8. [Mouthfuls]
CENTRAL VILLAGE—Would this week be complete without a final nugget of DessertTruck goodness? No, sir, it would not. Blogger Central Village: "If there is any way to create a waiting/dining area without violating any permit laws, go for it. Seats may be tricky, but a heat lamp, plastic palm tree and swatch of AstroTurf could go a long way. Long live DessertTruck." [Central Village]

Because it is, quite frankly, all we can think about now, let's check out the Good News/Bad News early line on Central Village newcomer DessertTruck. We're going to wager there's not going to be a lot of bad news here, but let's see, shall we?
1) Good News: "I waded through the costumed masses tonight to see if the story of Dessert Truck could really be true, and let me assure you my friends: it is. First I ordered the warm Chocolate Bread Pudding, its rich, sweet and full-cocoa-flavored sponginess lurking beneath a sticky pool of creme anglaise. This was a beautiful thing. Did I mention that I purchased this on the street?! No waiting for a table, or a waiter... no dinner necessary... just me and my treat." [Scoboco]
2) Good News: "This is very different from Treats Truck...they just sell baked goods, while DessertTruck is selling high end freshly made desserts. Tried it last night...it's amazing!!" [Eater Guest Commenter]
3) Good News: Naturellement, we had to check out the DessertTruck for ourselves last night, so we dropped by at about 6:30pm. Alas, the serving door was still locked shut, and though we did see a gentleman puttering about inside, there were to be no treats for us. And yet, who cares? We were in the presence of DessertTruck, and all was good in the universe.

WEST VILLAGE—We'd run this all caps, if we could. From the PR folks: "Centro Vinoteca starts serving brunch this Saturday, Nov. 3. Brunch will be served 12-4pm Saturday and Sunday. Menu highlights: farro granola, poached eggs over potato-prosciutto-fontina cake, carbonara frittata, eggs & fennel sausage sandwich, fried eggs over polenta and broccoli rabe with spicy tomato sauce." [EaterWire Inbox]
MURRAY HILL—Following up on yesterday's Wire intel about the new 2nd Ave. Deli, NY1 weighs in with some new details today: "The finishing touches for the new kitchen are underway. The tables are ready to be set, and the soda fountain is ready to go, with Bosco on tap." Also, do note that opening won't be next week, but will happen sometime in November. [NY1 via The Real Estate]
REALITYWORLD—The fine folks at The Food Network drop a line to let us know that episodes of The Next Iron Chef can be viewed online starting each Monday morning for the previous night's show. As you were. [FoodNetwork.com]
