Checking In: The Fall Preview's Delayed Openings

Every September, the New York Times and other mainstream New York publications come out with fall dining previews. Fall is a heady time in the restaurant world, and practically everyone wants to open between Labor Day and Thanksgiving. But it rarely ever works out for everyone. Almost eight months since he fall previews came out, it is unequivocally spring. We figured it was time to check in on some of the big name places everyone was excited about in September to see just how long they've been delayed and who's already shuttered.

10 Downing
Original Projected Opening: November
Opening: Their latest projected opening in March came and went. We'd be surprised if they were delayed too much past May.
Back story: Owned by Joel Michel and Vincent Seufert, the restaurant was originally linked to chef Stephane Dorian, who owned Le Zoo and then later to Scott Bryan, Katy Sparks and most recently, Jason Neroni. The space apparently already has a beer and wine license and is just looking to get full liquor.

Co.
Original Projected Opening: December
Opening: Lord knows. The plywooded spot in Chelsea hasn't seen much action these last eight months and we haven't heard a peep from owner Jim Lahey.
Back story: This is the highly anticipated pizza joint from Sullivan Street Bakery owner Jim Lahey. It got a lot of buzz during the early announcements but not much work or ink has been put towards the project recently.

Zeppelin:
Original Projected Opening: November
Opening: Long ways off
Back story: The owners of Employees Only were set to open a restaurant with four dining rooms and a garden last November in a space on West 9th St.. That plan fell through and more recently, the EO team was linked to a new spot in Tribeca on Church and Worth that they will open as The Macao Trading Co.

The Shutter: Cafe L'Angolo, and a week in Review

This was a big week in shutters. So for this edition of the Shutter we're going to report on one new closure and recap the sad events of the week:

2008_04_barfryshuttered.jpg1) Greenwich Village: A tipster writes in on the shuttering of Cafe L'Angolo in the Village: "Sad to report that long-time Italian cafe L'Angolo on the NW corner of Houston & Thompson Streets has been closed for a week (or more). Looks pretty permanent - even the name has been cut out of the awning." [Shutter Inbox]

Recaps:
2) West Village: One of the biggest shutters of the week was BarFry, Josh DeChellis' Deathwatched tempura bar. We're expecting he will be turning the space and/or the space next door into his new project The Windsor soon. [The Shutter]

The Shutter: Cantina Gutted

2008_04_cantina.jpg

Jason Swamy-owned project on Avenue B and East Third St. Cantina is not just shuttered—it's been gutted. We say this a lot around here but...place was doomed from the start. Exhibit A: Jason Neroni, the consulting chef just seems to leave a path of destruction in his wake, and from the beginning it was never quite clear how long he would be consulting/cooking in the kitchen. Exhibit B: The space. The restaurant in the space before, General Store, didn't fair too well either, and neither have a few others on the same strip (Carnevale excluded) trying to make those rents and attract a sophisticated clientèle. Exhibit C: On numerous spot checks in the months after the opening the restaurant was dark. In summation: inconsistent hours, little media attention post-opening combined with the Neroni factor and the south Avenue B hellmouth location meant this guy was a goner long ago.

The Dish: Bun, Cantina, The Bourgeois Pig, The Australian, Korhogo, 18 Ave. B, Tarabia Restaurant, 105 Riv

2007_10_bun.jpg
[Bun by Femia, 09/30/2007]

1) Bun: Can't afford the upscale Vietnamese offerings at Drew Nieporent's Mai House? Stop by this tiny 45-seat Soho newcomer. Bun is run by Mai House chef Michael Bao Huynh and his wife Thao Nguyen (both formerly of Bao Noodles and Bao 111). The concept here is Vietnamese small plates, which includes dishes like poached egg with sea urchin and truffle and herb-poached black chicken with fennel, grapefruit, and ginseng broth. Yet another reason to drop in: Huynh and Nguyen are also serving four types of pho. They're hoping to open sometime within the next week. 143 Grand St at Lafayette St; (212) 431-7999 [NY Mag]

2) Cantina: Chef Jason Neroni, sadly best-known now for a kerfuffle that landed him in jail a few months back, is consulting at this East Village Cuban restaurant opening tomorrow night. The menu, per the press materials, features "pan-latin home cooking on small plates, complemented by a large variety of Latin beers and sodas" like the interesting-sounding lamb tongue sandwich with membrillo and almond butter. 29 Ave B between 2nd and 3rd Sts; (212) 228-0599 [TONY]

3) The Bourgeois Pig: East Village wine bar Bourgeois Pig has a new, larger location in which patrons can lounge on plush velvet chairs while sipping libations designed by mixologist Philip Ward of Death & Co. This will be the Pig's only location, as per RareDaily, we learn that the West Village outpost is being turned into a beer bar called, for some reason, 124 Rabbit Club. 111 E 7th St between First Ave and Ave A; (212) 475-2246 [RareDaily]

Midtown, Carroll Gardens, East Village and LES Dish, this way. >>
