Today Frankie Boom Boom finally gets his chance to review the perplexing, the overwrought, the neon, Kurve. The entire experience—from the design to the music to the food to the service—offends the Brunz and he awards it a stinging goose egg. But why review a place so obviously egregious and underpopulated? Bruni explains:
"It could be argued that reviewing a restaurant this assertively kooky is shooting gills, fins and shells in a barrel, but Kurve is a riddle and lesson too ripe to ignore. How do restaurateurs pour this much money and this much vanity into a project and bungle it to the extent that the Kurve brigade does?Secession to the Third Degree.>>
The first review is up for 10 Downing. It's from Dame Greene and—surprise, surprise— she's falling all over herself for this food: "The cooks play with all the usual ingredients as if they’d just invented them. The squid-ink agnolotti are rich with crab and vibrate with a citric rush of lemon butter. Lush homemade potato gnocchi mingle with braised porcini, butternut squash, and sheep’s-milk cheese...Chickpea fritters are almost gossamer." [NYM]
Last night the long delayed, as in over a year delayed, 10 Downing opened to the public after a week and a half of friends and family dinners, an onslaught of press buildup, and some not so subtle shilling from friends. A low key opening, the room ranged from half to three quarters full throughout the evening, and all three owners, two chefs—Jason Neroni and Katy Sparks— and PR mastermind Steve Hall (all relieved they were finally open) were on hand to make sure it all went smoothly.

Happy Halloween, from Daniel and his friends
MEATPACKING DISTRICT— The Feedbag reports that Manor has been seized almost two weeks ago: "Luckily, in the event that you were planning to spend Halloween at a club no one cares about, you need only walk several blocks west." [TFB]
WEST VILLAGE— TONY reports that the latest opening date for 10 Downing is November 12, a little earlier than originally projected. [TONY]

Yesterday the news broke that 10 Downing is now open for friends and family and prepping to open to the public in a little over two weeks. Friend to everyone involved Ms. Andrea Strong stopped by today and has some new details on plans for a little something called 10 Downing Cafe and loving nods for the Mediterranean, market-driven, reasonably priced, neighborhood-geared menu, the "light, lofty, sunny" vibe, and and "eclectic mix of striking artwork". Click through for her full report on the menu items (pimenton croutons! saffron paella!).

OMG. We thought this day would never come. Per New York restaurant duchess Gael Greene: "Stephane Dorian has sent emails advising that only friends and family can reserve for the next two weeks as the long-delayed 10 Downing Street finally opens today (Wednesday). 'If you wish to join in the celebration please email me your requests for a table directly,' Dorian requests." The official word for the rest of us: the place has "at least two weeks" before the official opening. [Insatiable Critic via GS; previously]

It's about time to check in on a favorite little fall opening, 10 Downing. In the running for the title for the most epically delayed restaurant opening in recent memory, the space was originally set to debut last November. At first it was the usual construction delays, then came the chef shuffle, and later an issue with the gas. More recently, we heard there were some zoning problems, but co-owner Stephane Dorian sets us straight: it's all a comical battle with the red tape of the DOB. Take it away Steph:
The plumbing, the sprinklers, the permits.>>
Every year there are certain holdout restaurants, places so delayed, so troubled they make the fall previews two years in a row. Last year, the award went to the now buzzing Buffa's replacement Delicatessen. This year, we have two projects up for the dubious honor: 10 Downing and Co. Pizzeria. 10 Downing, set to open last November, was plagued with problems, including permit issues with the city and a chef shuffle, and the opening date got pushed back throughout the year. Meanwhile, Co. simply sat dormant.
Here's the good news: the Times is putting a 10 Downing opening on next Wednesday, a good projection given the place looks ready to go and is already on OpenTable. Co., however, is set at "end of October" which could mean we're looking at an opening anytime between Halloween and Valentine's Day. Let's compare the 2007 vs. 2008 write ups:
10 Downing, Co. then and now.>>The delayed project 10 Downing is now up on OpenTable. You can't book a resy there, and this by no means guarantees an opening (Libertine is also on it; Apiary has gone on and off twice). But at least it means someone in the driver's seat decided they were close enough to the debut to shell out for those OpenTable fees. [OpenTable]
1) Greenwich Village: Our roving photographer grabbed a shot of the former Cafe Figaro. Looks like the new owners are already in there and are planning some major construction. They've already begun dividing up the space into two large rooms. [PLYWOOD]
2) West Village: Above is the latest shot of the interior of 10 Downing. Furniture is all in, artwork is up. Looking ready to go... [PLYWOOD]
3) West Village: A reader has word on what's going into the old AOC Bedford space: "Today I noticed a public hearing-type sign posted on Bedford, next to the Blue Ribbon bakery and across the street from 'ino. It had the name of a liquor license applicant ("Quinto Quarto") and an address of 14 Bedford...now the space is papered over. Any ideas? I'd love a Spanish place!" [PLYWOOD]
Flatiron, Williamsburg, Cobble Hill, and more, ahead.>>
West Village: A corespondent checks in on the 10 Downing situation, most recently slated to have an "August opening," and notes that interior looks finished and they've made the biggest addition to the exterior since summer began—they've added a lovely decorative clock:
"Nice clock added to 10 Downing. I peeked through the window as well, and there are papers on a table like someone's in there planning something. The chairs are up on the tables. As I recall, it looks pretty close to done. I don't know what's preventing them from opening."Don't take the clock as a sign of opening however. Rep for the Jason Neroni project, Steve Hall, says he's "just not sure at this time" when this puppy will open, and last we heard they were still waiting for the gas. Three weeks more and these guys are going to make Flo Fab's fall previews for the second time around.
There was a call or two earlier this morning for some news about our favorite chef who never did jail time and yours, Jason Neroni. People, requests we would be pleased to accommodate include this one. First of all, go ahead and rescan the above gallery of Jason Neroni's next project, a market-driven restaurant 10 months delayed at 10 Downing Street. It'll be his first main stage gig since the bottom fell out at Porchetta. Reached via email this morning, not yet on vacation, Neroni's spokesperson Steven Hall updates, "Still no gas there but closer, looks like August opening." Neroni bit number two for you: At this moment, Mr. Neroni is at a wedding in San Francisco.

West Village: Welcome back to the curious plywood at 10 Downing, a restaurant now approaching its eighth month of crippling delays. If you can remember this far back, the project, cheffed by Jason Neroni and Katy Sparks, was set to open last November, and as far as we can tell is nowhere closer to its debut. A tipster just stopped in and reports the newest projection:
"All the windows were open (but still papered over.) Someone was sitting inside, and we spoke for a minute or two. She said they are not sure when they are opening (despite my pestering,) but they will be open before summer is over. Pictures were on the wall, and the entire interior was decorated. The bar still did not have alcohol yet. I think it could be ready to open in 2 or 3 weeks as the interior is completely done."While the interior may be done there is the not so little issue of the gas, which, as of last week had yet to be turned on. And lord knows what other red tape they're still waiting on. However long it takes, here's hoping it doesn't make it into the fall preview two years in a row.
West Village: A crafty resident of 10 Downing grabbed shots of the newly papered (formerly plywooded) windows of the beleaguered long awaiting Jason Neroni/Katy Sparks restaurant below his apartment. But he also snuck in to get some interior shots. Bravo. Last we heard from the people at Steve Hall PR, they're just waiting on some Dept. of Buildings paperwork, but a tipster has already alerted us to at least one sous chef that has left because of delays. Hell, at least they have furniture in there now. Perhaps we're optimists, but we're putting our updated bets on an mid-to-late-June open.
· Checking In: The Fall Preview's Delayed Openings [~E~]
· EaterWire: 10 Downing Opening in April? [~E~]
Every September, the New York Times and other mainstream New York publications come out with fall dining previews. Fall is a heady time in the restaurant world, and practically everyone wants to open between Labor Day and Thanksgiving. But it rarely ever works out for everyone. Almost eight months since he fall previews came out, it is unequivocally spring. We figured it was time to check in on some of the big name places everyone was excited about in September to see just how long they've been delayed and who's already shuttered.
10 Downing
Original Projected Opening: November
Opening: Their latest projected opening in March came and went. We'd be surprised if they were delayed too much past May.
Back story: Owned by Joel Michel and Vincent Seufert, the restaurant was originally linked to chef Stephane Dorian, who owned Le Zoo and then later to Scott Bryan, Katy Sparks and most recently, Jason Neroni. The space apparently already has a beer and wine license and is just looking to get full liquor.
Co.
Original Projected Opening: December
Opening: Lord knows. The plywooded spot in Chelsea hasn't seen much action these last eight months and we haven't heard a peep from owner Jim Lahey.
Back story: This is the highly anticipated pizza joint from Sullivan Street Bakery owner Jim Lahey. It got a lot of buzz during the early announcements but not much work or ink has been put towards the project recently.
Zeppelin:
Original Projected Opening: November
Opening: Long ways off
Back story: The owners of Employees Only were set to open a restaurant with four dining rooms and a garden last November in a space on West 9th St.. That plan fell through and more recently, the EO team was linked to a new spot in Tribeca on Church and Worth that they will open as The Macao Trading Co.
