The Plywood Report: Brasserie Athenee, Stogo, Playa, Chipotle, and More

1) East Village: EV Grieve has some news on the supposed vegan ice cream shop on A and 10th: "the front windows have been papered over for weeks. And then! A sign just appeared, as this photo from our tipster shows...Stogo? As in consultant Malcolm Stogo of the Ice Cream University?" [PLYWOOD]

2) Cobble Hill: Some exciting tipster intel from Cobble Hill: "The old television repair shop on Henry & Atlantic in Brooklyn has permits up to reno to 'eating & drinking establishment'...saw the owners of Brooklyn Social going in and out..." Note: this is the TV repair shop mourned here by Gowanus Lounge. [PLYWOOD]

Disaster Report: Restaurants Hit By Fire, Car Crashes

2008_10_firelatin.jpgA number of restaurant disasters from the weekend:

· Yesterday an SUV crashed into Indus Valley restaurant on the Upper West Side, shattering the glass enclosed sidewalk cafe, which was "bustling with a lunchtime crowd." No one was seriously hurt.

· Late last week a fire broke out at Japanese restaurant Mura on 5th Ave in Park Slope.

· And a correspondent sends in the photo to the right of the back patio of East Williamsburg's Latin Cuisine. Firefighters chucked all of the restaurant's appliances and equipment there after extinguishing a fire that forced the entire northwest side of Grand Street between Bushwick and Humbolt to evacuate. No word yet on whether there were any injuries.

The Plywood Report: Pop's, Crumbs, another Park Slope Wine Bar, and More

1) Williamsburg: Our roving photographer has some shots of the soon to open Pop's in the old Kitchen Delight space on north 8th Street in BBurg: "The funny thing is that the menu looks pretty similar. That said, the food at Kitchen Delight was never as good as I wanted it to be, even for cheap junky burgers. And toward the end it started to feel a little dirty and neglected. Inside Pop's it looks like they redid the kitchen a little and the whole place smells like fresh urithane. The woman at the counter told me they weren't open yet and they will have take-out menus on Friday." [PLYWOOD]

The Week in Reviews: Socarrat Gets a One

2008_10_socarrat.jpgThe Brunster gives Chelsea's small cramped paella spot Socarrat Paella Bar a visit this week, awarding it a solid and positive one star review. Naturally, the write up is an assessment of the signature dish:

"It has a menu of some 20 tapas as well, but they’re not under the spotlight, and don’t really deserve to be. The paellas do.

...These aren’t perfect paellas, not nearly. Sometimes the meat or seafood is overcooked. But they’re better than the paellas at many other Spanish restaurants in New York, where paella doesn’t always fare so well. The rice above that blissful ultimate layer isn’t the least bit dry, and it’s thoroughly infused with oil, with seasonings, with the flavor of whatever’s around."

EaterWire: Schrager and the King of Spain, Smith's Grilled Cheese, a Beer Table Brunch, and More

2007_11_smiths.jpgSOBE— Cutlets, ahem, The Feedbag gets word that February's SoBe Wine and Food Festival may have even bigger names than the NYC version this weekend: "The Feedbag has it on good authority that Schrager is meeting with His Majesty Juan Carlos I, King of Spain, to finalize negotiations bringing the monarch to preside over the “Viva Espana” dinner being held next February at SOBE." [The Feedbag]

WEST VILLAGE— In honor of Fall, Smith's in the West Village is re-launching their Sunday grilled cheese menu. The $11 and $12 (this is fancy grilled cheese we're dealing with) sandwiches will be served from 5-10 p.m. on Sundays and after 10 every other day. [Strongbuzz]

EaterWire: Ozersky's FeedBag, Bobo's new Menu, Trillin in Chinatown, and More

2008_10_colson.jpg

CUTLETS— Tonight Cutlets, a.k.a. Citysearch's new restaurant editor Josh Ozersky, is holding a party at Elettaria to announce the new developments at the Citysearch blogs. But according to some timely Google Alerts, we've discovered the new blog will be called The Feedbag, at the now password protected site http://www.the-feedbag.com/. One of the first posts: a sit down with Bobo's new chef Patrick Connelly [EaterWire]

WEST VILLAGE— Speaking of Bobo's Patrick Connelly, his new menu debuts tonight. Tasting Table takes a peek: "For cocktail-side snacking there are potato-and-bone-marrow dauphines (tater tots fit for kings) and tempura-fried cornichons with Japanese mayo and shaved bottarga...But the real star here is the St. Louis native's awe-inspiring spareribs, which he cooks in duck fat until the meat starts to slide off the bone..." The Shutter: Game Over for Doomed Lookout Hill

2008_10_lookouthill.jpg

Park Slope: The four month-old Lookout Hill, the latest bbq spot to take over the corner of 5th Avenue and President Street in Park Slope (it was just recently Biscuit BBQ), has closed. The place has been dark, gates drawn for the past week now and a call over to the owner's other restaurant, Cornelia Street Cafe, confirms. Our Park Slope operatives tell us the space has held a least four different restaurants (including the jazzy Night and Day and the fusion spot Bibi's) in the last seven years, automatically qualifying the space for the Doomed Restaurants List.

The Plywood Report: Co., Fatty Crab, d.b.a., Santorini, Boi, and More

1) Chelsea: We took a recent look at Co., the new pizza project from Sullivan St. Bakery's Jim Lahey's and backed by one Jean-Georges' Vongerichten. It looks exactly as it has for the past year, though Lahey has said he'd like to get this out the door by the end of '08. [PLYWOOD]

2) Williamsburg: Over in Williamsburg the new d.b.a branch looks like it's moving ever closer to opening. It finally has some signage out front announcing the arrival and offering an email for more info. [PLYWOOD]

3) Williamsburg: And just a few blocks away over on Bedford and Grand we have a new spot, Santorini. Any intel on this one is much appreciated. [PLYWOOD]

Thursday Opening Report: Sonia Rose, Fulton, tbsp, Sweet Revenge Certified Open, Magnolia on Monday

sonia%20rose.jpg
A formerly Plywooded Sonia Rose

1) Lower East Side: UrbanDaddy reported this week on the opening of a new Italian resutaurant called Sonia Rose which apparently features some kind of bizarre theatrical gimmicks. They write: “So, while you're biting into your Free Range Hen with Perigourdine Sauce and Truffle Oil Game Liver, the live-string quartet on the front stage will be playing a piece that seems to go well with hen.” An early reviewer seems pleased: “The salmon with the lightest hue of green curry & market vegetables was cooked superbly. And the Hangar steak with port wine reduction and delicious swiss chard was balanced and delightful with the BYOB bottle of Cabernet we brought." Status: Certified Open. 74 Orchard Street; 212-260-5317. [UD]

Eater Maps: New York's Cursed Restaurant Spaces

2007_06_borough5.jpg'Tis the season for restaurant openings. And thinking about the slew of scheduled openings in the upcoming months, we're sickly curious about the new Chodorow project at his doomed space at 12 East 22nd Street. Most recently Borough Food & Drink, it will open at some point in the fall as Almond. The epic saga of that space got us thinking of all of the other restaurant disasters around the city and which spaces are perhaps cursed to fail. We've compiled our eight favorites below, but there are countless other contenders just waiting to be added to the map.

Know of a space that is doomed? Let us know, and we'll do an update.

The Plywood Report: Pinche Taqueria, The Charles, The Bell House, and More!

1) Noho: As reported here in June, Pinche Taqueria is opening a second location on Lafayette and Bleecker. A correspondent stopped by earlier this week: "Looks almost ready to go. When I went to grab a shot of the interior, I ran into the owner, who asked me if I was 'ready for the Pinche Taqueria experience???' Fear. I asked when he expected to open and he said they'd be up and running, complete with a take-out window, in a week." According to Grub St. they have a liquor license and will be open from 7 a.m. - 4 a.m. [PLYWOOD]

2) West Village: A tipster sends us the latest picture from The Charles the new John DeLucie project in the old Le Deux Gamins space on 4th and 10th: "The old Le Deux Gamins space is being reworked into a swanky upscale spot by John Delucie. The new place will open in around 2 weeks. The space looks amazing, will have bar & private dining area." [PLYWOOD]

The Plywood Report: Grandaisy, The National, Jean Adamson's Space, and More

1) Soho: There's been some new work at the old La Streghe space on Grand and West Broadway. The space still looks a long ways off, but they're making significant progress. A tipster tells us it will be Italian. [PLYWOOD]

2) Tribeca: Above, we have a shot of the new Grandaisy Bakery, opening on the corner of Beach and West Broadway. [PLYWOOD]

3) Lower East Side: A reader spots a new space on Rivington: "If you haven't heard, I just walked by a new restaurant called 'The National' opening on Rivington west of Freemans Sporting Club. They're under construction now but supposedly opening next month." [PLYWOOD]
