2008_10_lan.jpg

EAST VILLAGE— Third Avenue Japanese restaurant Lan has been shuttered by the DOH due to a lack of permit. They tell us they hope to be back open by tomorrow. [EaterWire]

TIMES SQUAREDavid Burke's people respond to the allegation that he groped a Hawaiin Tropic Zone employees, brought forward today in a $600 million lawsuit against the restaurant: "The allegations targeting Chef David Burke, a consulting chef for Hawaiian Tropic Zone, are without merit. Most significantly, Chef Burke is not a party defendant to the suit. His name appears gratuitously for reasons known only to plaintiffs’ attorneys." [The Feed-Bag]

The Plywood Report: Pinche Taqueria, The Charles, The Bell House, and More!

1) Noho: As reported here in June, Pinche Taqueria is opening a second location on Lafayette and Bleecker. A correspondent stopped by earlier this week: "Looks almost ready to go. When I went to grab a shot of the interior, I ran into the owner, who asked me if I was 'ready for the Pinche Taqueria experience???' Fear. I asked when he expected to open and he said they'd be up and running, complete with a take-out window, in a week." According to Grub St. they have a liquor license and will be open from 7 a.m. - 4 a.m. [PLYWOOD]

2) West Village: A tipster sends us the latest picture from The Charles the new John DeLucie project in the old Le Deux Gamins space on 4th and 10th: "The old Le Deux Gamins space is being reworked into a swanky upscale spot by John Delucie. The new place will open in around 2 weeks. The space looks amazing, will have bar & private dining area." [PLYWOOD]

The Shutter: Brick Oven Bar B Que Already Doneski?

2008_06_brickovenbbq.jpg

Gowanus: Back in February Brownstoner brought word that a new barbecue and brick oven pizza joint would be opening in a warehouse on 3rd Ave and 6th St much to the delight of folks in the nabe starved for a new restaurant. But apparently they weren't starved enough. Early reviewers of Brick Oven Bar B Que on Gothamist, Yelp, and Chowhound weren't too fond of the food and the "just plain weird" decor. And now, just two and a half months after opening, we learn from a tipster (and his shot of a real estate ad over the warehouse) that the charming, though perhaps ill-conceived, experiment has already shuttered. Back during the opening Gothamist wrote: "Rumor has it that Mr. Maropakis turned down millions for the space, opting to open the restaurant instead as a labor of love." Did he decided to cash in on those millions?

Eater Inside: Bar Tano

Krieger, 2/16/07

A spinoff by the creators of Park Slope mainstay Bar Toto, Bar Tano opened two weeks ago in the neighborhood-that-could, Gowanus. The block it's on is still a bit rough and tumble, but the way this neighborhood has been changing, it won't be that way for long. The pressed tin ceilings and zinc bar are meant to give the place a "turn of the century vibe" much like what's going on over at Bar Toto, but the menu here is lighter, focusing on Italian small plates. Further reading here and here .

Bar Tano
Gowanus, Small Plates, Wine Bar
457 Third Ave., Gowanus; (718) 499-3400
Open Sun-Thu, 5pm-midnight; Fri-Sat, 5pm-2am

Adventures in Shilling #016: Shills from Remedy, Bar Tano, Spitzer's

It's time for another edition of Adventures in Shilling, in which we fight shilling the best way we can, by shaming tasteless, unscrupulous shills into submission. Well, that's the plan, at least. Fight shills yourself by dropping offensive links to tips@eater.com.

This week we have a smorgasbord of shills from across the web and across the city. We start off with this one straight from the comments, which is a giveaway not because of the wording (though it's pretty suspicious) but the fact that the subject here is the Remedy Diner:

"Reading some of the posted comments is very surprising, I have been eating at the remedy very often since the grand opening. The food is really good and my children definately agree, the staff is very attentive and I never have problems with waiting for a seat or food. My 3 year old son really enjoys it and he looks forward to the special fruit platter and home made cookies....I would honestly have to say some of these comments probably come from the local restaurants that are losing customers due to remedy's comfortable atmosphere and quality food service, which the lower east side desperately needed."
Shill Probability: 40%

Here we have an email in the Eater inbox from resident who just really really likes what's going on a Bar Tano:

"On Tuesday night, Gowanus welcomed the addition of Bar Tano to the neighborhood. They had a bar only opening from 6-11 and had people spilling out onto the street. Last night was their full opening. Bar Tano is from the same people who brought Park Slope Bar Toto and is located on the corner of 9th Street and 3rd Avenue. Don't know how well they'll do trying to draw people down the hill, but it is a nice looking spot. It has been populated by late 20s, early 30s so far.
Shill Probability: 67%

Plywood Report: Ippudo, Houdstooth, Brick Oven BBQ Pit, Clover Club, Yogo Monster, and 71 Clinton

This afternoon we bring you Plywood Mainia, because just a simple Plywood report won't cut it this week.

ippudomainplywood.jpg
Plywood of the upcoming satellite for Japanese ramen chain, Ippudo

1) East Village: The opening of the East Village outlet of the Japanese chain Ippudo, a highly anticipated event among ramen lovers, creeps ever closer. From the looks of plywood on 4th ave between 9th and 10th Street in the East Village, the outside woodwork is done but they've yet to finish off the sign and the inside. [PLYWOOD]

2) Midtown: Imbible has the latest on Houdstooth, the new 6,800 square foot bi-level monster to open in Midtown: "Nicholas Cohen, Kevin McKenna and Dave Renehan, the owners of West 37th Street bar Stitch, have a new bar and grill in the works. Cohen tells us that Houndstooth--located at 37th Street and 8th Avenue, in the space formerly occupied by the old Chock Full O' Nuts store--will make its debut between late March and mid-April." EaterWire: 2nd Ave. Deli Set for 12/17; Lines Around Block at Senor Pollo Opening, Much More!!

2007_12_aveinside.jpgMURRAY HILL—The new incarnation of the 2nd Avenue Deli—and its interior revealed by Eater earlier this week (right)—is slated to open to the public on Monday, December 17. This news per a press release sent along by the folks over at Rubenstein. Color: "The deli’s opening will be celebrated with a ceremonial salami cutting of 'nickel shtikel' links on Monday, December 17, 2007 at 11 a.m." Live Eater coverage guaranteed. [EaterWire Inbox]

EAST VILLAGE—Until Midtown Lunch launches its downtown edition, we'll have to fill the void. Two tipster reports: a) 9:38am: "Senor Pollo is scheduled to have their grand opening this afternoon at the corner of 13th and 1st. They’ve been handing out free lunch postcards, that are good for one-quarter roasted chicken and two sides for lunch today only"; b) 1:13pm (via phone): "Senor Pollo is open, they're giving away free food, and the neighborhood has responded by lining up around the block." Anyone got pics? [EaterWire Inbox/EaterWire Mobile]

GOWANUS—Per Food of the Future, this wacky rumor: "according to a couple of sources, 7th street between 2nd and 3rd aves will soon be home to a new musical venue run by the good folks at union hall. given the problems that i've heard about with their current location - i.e. noise complaints, it makes sense to open something in a location where noise is not an issue." And what better place that a deserted, industrial block near the Gowanus Canal? [Food of the Future]

RIVERDALE—So there's this dude, a commercial real estate broker oddly enough, who decided that what Riverdale really needs is its own Starbucks. He has succeeded in his task. So, today's question: does this make him a hero or a villain? Racked is polling its readership, and the results so far—eh, go vote and see for yourself. [Racked]
