1) Vinegar Hill: NYMag has it that a new restaurant from Sam Buffa and Jean Adamson of Freemans named Vinegar Hill House is set to open this week in this tiny fringe nabe. They write: “Adamson describes her menu as Moosewood Cookbook–ish in its focus on grains, legumes, and vegetables, which are intended to supplement smaller portions of protein. Her fish will be sustainable and her meats broken down from whole animals procured from Fleisher’s, the upstate cult butcher, all cooked in the wood-burning oven. Also on offer: a raw bar, an American-cheese-and-homemade-cracker board, and $9 classic cocktails—liquor license pending.” Status: Not Open. Soft-Opening tomorrow. 72 Hudson Street, Vinegar Hill; 718-522-1018. [NYM]
1) Lower East Side: Per the shot above, a new smallish spot is opening next to Freeman's Sporting Goods on Rivington. White tiling along the back wall, big open windows to the street, a grouping of small tables. Looks like a casual cafe. [PLYWOOD]
2) Upper West Side: A tipster writes in about a new wine bar/restaurant opening on 99th and Broadway: "Called 'UVA 99,' on b'way bet 99th and 100th...I spoke with the owners who were there overseeing the work, who say they intend to open this Friday evening. The food will be Italian and French with about 5 main courses, a larger variety of small plates including terrines and patés supposedly made on site, and desserts...there is a long bar at the front with tables along the facing wall, and a larger dining area in the back." [PLYWOOD]
3) East Village: Imbible has the news on another new place going in on the northern end of Avenue B, De Nova: "The space, formerly home to the Furniture Place...is larger than it looks, but it's unclear whether De Nova will be a coffee shop-style cafe posing as a restaurant that serves three squares a day, or whether it'll be more like a real restaurant with a coffee bar. I suspect they don't have a liquor license and won't be able to get one." [PLYWOOD]
UPPER WEST SIDE—An Upper West Sider, saddened by the state of his neighborhood in general, sends in this tip about local bar Prohibition: "...next-door neighbor Prohibition, long a decent live-music venue, is said to be closing in the next few weeks. I guess we'll finally be getting the Duane Reade that has been missing from this 8-block stretch. Lucky us." UPDATE: As it turns out, Prohibition is definitively not closing. Per an email from the owner: "...There is absolutely no truth to this. I can't tell you how many emails and calls I've had to respond to due to this irresponsible posting. Apparently the "tip" was received from a neighborhood resident. Who knows what his motives may have been?" [EaterWire]
MIDTOWN—Zach Brooks of Midtown Lunch laments the loss of the Manhattan Mall Food Court and the island's only Arby's: "The Manhattan Mall on 34th St. & 7th Ave. has sold the food court space in their basement to J.C. Penny, and most of the places have already closed. The biggest casualty, Manhattan’s only Arby’s, the undisputed favorite for fans of fast food roast beef flavored bologna. It will be missed."
