Bagel Crisis Update: Montague Street Lowering Prices

2008_08_bagelprices.jpg

Could the Great '08 Bagel Crisis (linked to the Great '08 Pizza Crisis) be coming to an end? Check out the above sign at Montague Street Bagels and decide for yourselves. Says our tipster:

"This was a shocker, but a testament to the honesty of Montague Street Bagels to it's customers. As the sign explains itself, they lowered their prices due to falling prices of flour. Props to them. I love that 24 hour bagel store."
Will H&H, and Di Fara on the pizza front, follow suit?

The Plywood Report: Luigi's, Cookout Grill, d'espresso, Spicy Pickle, and More!!

1) Chinatown: A reader writes in to tell us about Cafe Petisco, opening up in Chinatown: "Just saw this today as I was walking to the F on my way to work. Renovation underway on the corner of East Broadway and Jefferson St. (right by Seward Park and the relatively new Broadway East restaurant), looks like the place will be called 'Cafe Petisco.' The place used to be called 'East Side Cafe,' a very little, low-key neighborhood diner." [PLYWOOD]

2) Clinton Hill: Clinton Hill Blog has some news regarding the space on 275 Grand: "I have two reports from readers that the sign now says it will be home to Luigi’s Pizza. An offshoot or relocation for the pizza place on DeKalb near Pratt? Or a different Luigi?" [PLYWOD]

3) West Village: We already heard there was a Cookout Grill moving into the old Popeye's space, and Lost City is reporting there's yet another going up: "...here's another in the former 99-cent store under Time Machine at 14th and 7th. You've got to wonder about that Asian-styled, chicken-clubbing caveman mascot." [PLYWOOD]

CrimeWatch: The Busy Chef, Oven, and Blue Pig Shuttered After Partner's Arrest

2008_07_bchef.jpg

According to the Brooklyn Paper, three of the Brooklyn Heights operations co-owned by Dan Kaufman, the manager who allegedly stole over $25,000 from customers, have shuttered. The store The Busy Chef, the ice cream shop Blue Pig, and the pizzeria The Oven have all been dark since Monday, 11 days after Kaufman's arrest

"...the restaurant’s other owners told employees that Monday night was their last, a source said. 'They closed it up at 11 — they just shut everything down and started throwing out the food,' the source said. The Wine Bar at 50 Henry Street, also co-owned by Kaufman, is still open. Owners are expected to talk with the Wine Bar’s manager sometime this week about the future, the source said."
The paper hears that they owners can't pay employees anymore, and the publicized arrest couldn't have been good for business. The District Attorney is set to drop an indictment against Kaufman later this week.

EaterWire: Seymour Burton Discontinues Brunch, Park Ave. Summer, LeNell's Update, and More!!

2008_01_seymourburton1.jpgEAST VILLAGE— Some news from Seymour Burton owner Adam Cohn: "...after seven months of dilatory weekend brunch service we are hanging up our eggs Benedict. Last weekend was our last brunch service until further notice. Our brunch was beloved but ultimately unpopular and we grew tired of twisting arms to get our employees to work it. Now that it’s summer I can’t keep them out of the park even if I could tie them up. Instead we shall expand our dinner service by opening Monday nights and by offering a take-away and delivery menu, available for order by phone or at a soon-to-be-constructed walk-up order window." [EaterWire]

UPPER EAST SIDE— Another season, another design change at Park Avenue Spring/Summer/Winter/Fall. They've got a new menu, and returned the space to look something like this. [EaterWire]

EaterWire: A60's Opening Date, Quhnia Closing, Happy Diner Reopens, and More!

2007_05_a60.jpg

SOHO— We just got word that the official opening date of 60 Thompson's rooftop bar A60 is May 15. You have exactly 27 days to get your membership card or find someone who has one. [EaterWire]

EAST VILLAGE— Cutty has the news on another East Village shutter: "East 1st Street suffers another casualty. Homey Eastern European–fusion spot Quhnia is open today and tomorrow and possibly Friday and Saturday of next week, but a woman who answered the phone there told us that, after four years in business, that’ll be all she wrote: 'We’re in the process of closing.'" [Cutlets]

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS— But there's always some good news to combat the bad. From the inbox: I'm the tipster who mentioned that the Happy Days Diner in Brooklyn Heights was 'closed' for renovations, and not 'closed for business.' Walked past there on my way home yesterday and noticed they are now back open, pretty quick turnaround...definately an improvement...but then again, how could it not be an improvement over how it looked before?" The Shutter: Adios Theater Cafe, Happy Days Diner

What with the seizures of Osteria del Sole and North West and the Disaster Edition shutter of Crave Ceviche Bar, plus the announced closing of Divine Bar East, it's been a shuttery week. The good news? There aren't very many more to report. The stragglers ahead:

2008_03_shutterreport.jpg1) Forest Hills: Forest Hills blog has the news on the shuttering Adios Theater Cafe: "According to an email, the Theater Cafe has closed (and chained) its doors. There's a note on the door that says it's for sale. I haven't confirmed, but if true it would be a loss." [FHB]

2) Brooklyn Heights: The Brooklyn Paper reports on some sad developments at the Happy Days Diner: "There’s paper over the windows at the Happy Days diner in Brooklyn Heights. GO Brooklyn has enjoyed many a short stack there and is hoping for the best!" [BP] UPDATE: A commenter notes Happy Days in only temporarily shuttered for renovations.

The Shutter: Armando's Restaurant, Twisted Burger, Strand Diner, Brick Oven Gallery, Hot Szechuan

It's a pretty hefty Shutter Report this week with closures from the UWS to the EVill to all parts of Brooklyn. Know of a place that has met their demise? Let us know.

2008_03_armandos.jpg1 ) Brooklyn Heights: After a feeble attempt by Brooklyn Heights Blog to save the restaurant and its iconic sign, the 72 year-old Armando's Restaurant & Bar bit the big one: "A classic Brooklyn Heights restaurant will turn off its lights for the last time this week, unplugging an iconic sign that has glowed on Montague Street for decades. On March 16, the 72-year-old Armando’s Restaurant will serve its final meal before turning off that lobster sign, which neighbors fought to preserve — albeit briefly." [Brooklyn Paper]

2) East Village: Imbible has the intel on the conversion of East Village's Twisted Burger: "Say goodbye to Twisted Burger and hello to Berry Bistro, which will make its case for a license to serve wine and beer...As of Saturday...the Twisted Burger awning was still up, but I guess the owners plan to open Berry Bistro fairly soon; they didn't appear to be doing too much work." Pre-Plywood Reveal: Morton's Takes Brooklyn

2008_01_morton.jpg

Given the outsized hype surrounding last month's announcement that steak purveyor Morton's plans to open an outpost near the Brooklyn Bridge (in, yes, Brooklyn), we were delighted to receive this here rendering of the 14,000 square foot restaurant-to-be. Conclusion: Peter Luger, all is forgiven.
