Coca-Cola is officially bringing back Surge, its sugared-up, caffeinated behemoth of a soda that gained popularity in the 1990s. According to the Verge, customers can now buy the "fully-loaded citrus soda" that was originally developed to be a "Mountain Dew Killer" exclusively on Amazon. Businessweek writes that the news of Surge's return was first announced by the Surge Movement Facebook page, "whose 128,000 members lobbied for its return and paid for a billboard in Atlanta."
Surge was initially introduced in 1996 but was discontinued in 2001. While it has many fans, the soda also drew plenty of controversy: It was banned from many schools because of its high caffeine and sugar content that often left kids "wired." Although Surge is currently only being sold through Amazon, Coke tells Businessweek that "it may expand the drink to other retailers" depending on the reactions of consumers. On Amazon, a dozen 16-ounce cans retails for $14. Go, watch a video announcing its return:
