The Grocery Manufactures Association (GMA) — which represents many large food companies including Kraft Foods Group and Nestlé — announced that it will make information about the chemicals it uses in food "more transparent." According to Politico, this means that the GMA will voluntarily give the FDA access to "a large database of safety information for chemicals commonly used in processed foods." This includes snacks like Doritos, Cheetos, Fritos, and Twinkies. Currently, many chemicals used by food companies are "mostly self-approved" after consulting with "publicly available science and panels of industry-paid experts."
The Wall Street Journal notes that the GMA also plans to help "establish a new standard for food companies to use to assess the safety of additives." Hopefully this means in the future, fewer foods will contain the same chemicals used in yoga mats.
