EaterWire: Tavern On The Green Opening SF's Biggest Restaurant
Wednesday, May 7, 2008

2008_05_metreon.jpgCENTRAL PARK— In one of the strangest moves yet for one of New York's most famous restaurants—and one of the highest grossing restaurants in the country—Tavern on the Green announced it will be opening a 43,000 square foot restaurant in San Francisco in summer '09. This is the first time the owners are branching out beyond their Central Park setting, but they are doing it with gusto. The restaurant will be the biggest in all of San Francisco, it will be located on top of the Metreon movie theater, and 75% of the space will be dedicated to private events. They plan to bank heavily on out of towner traffic from the convention center next door, and if you take into consideration the other cities they were looking at—Las Vegas and Miami—big convention and tourist dollars were always the main goals: "We want to take full advantage of the San Francisco diner, as well as the 8 million people that go through the convention center each year," the COO told SF Business Times. And who will be manning the kitchen at this behemoth? Brian Young former chef de cuisine at Le Bernardin and executive chef at Citarella.
