It's a pretty hefty Shutter Report this week with closures from the UWS to the EVill to all parts of Brooklyn. Know of a place that has met their demise? Let us know.
1 ) Brooklyn Heights: After a feeble attempt by Brooklyn Heights Blog to save the restaurant and its iconic sign, the 72 year-old Armando's Restaurant & Bar bit the big one: "A classic Brooklyn Heights restaurant will turn off its lights for the last time this week, unplugging an iconic sign that has glowed on Montague Street for decades. On March 16, the 72-year-old Armando’s Restaurant will serve its final meal before turning off that lobster sign, which neighbors fought to preserve — albeit briefly." [Brooklyn Paper]
2) East Village: Imbible has the intel on the conversion of East Village's Twisted Burger: "Say goodbye to Twisted Burger and hello to Berry Bistro, which will make its case for a license to serve wine and beer...As of Saturday...the Twisted Burger awning was still up, but I guess the owners plan to open Berry Bistro fairly soon; they didn't appear to be doing too much work." [Imbible]
3) Upper West Side: We have word of a diner closing on the UWS: "I was semi-shocked to see two hand-drawn signs on the window of the Strand Diner on West 96th last evening...With real estate the way it is in this neighborhood (the building boom continues, unlike most other parts of the country), it’s possible the owner of this little one-story building sold it to a developer who is going to build another tall glass-box condo." [Lairig Marketing]
4) Park Slope: Brooklyn Paper is reporting the almost certain shutter of a favorite Slope spot: "Park Slopers are in a tizzy over the rumored closing of Red Hot Szechuan — what one local told us was 'the best Chinese food in the neighborhood.' Although nothing official has been announced, the grate in front of the restaurant has been drawn for a week, and numerous phone calls to the restaurant have gone unanswered." [Brooklyn Paper]
5) Williamsburg: The BP is also reporting the shutter of Williamsburg pizza spot Brick Oven Gallery, though the phone and answering machine are still functional: "GO Brooklyn was sad to hear that the Brick Oven Gallery in Williamsburg, a great pizza shop with a stellar backyard and an eggplant dish called “Brooklyn Caviar,”; has packed it in." [Brooklyn Paper] UPDATE: Contrary to the BP's report, Brick Oven Gallery is still open.
