Plywood Report: Co Pizzeria, Hot & Crusty, Five Napkin Burger and More!!
Friday, March 28, 2008

1) Chelsea: Co Pizzeria, the long awaited project from Sullivan St. bakery's Jim Lahey has plywood boards up, but the space looks a long way from being completed. We haven't heard much on the place since the announcement last summer, but hopefully things are still moving forward. [PLYWOOD]

2) Midtown West: A correspondent writes in: "The former Jezebel (690 9th Ave) space will apparently be 'Five napkin burger' and it is applying for a sidewalk permit but it's still pretty rough inside." This space has been in plywood stages for months, but this is a sure sign of progress. [PLYWOOD]

3) East Village: A tipster writes in with a shot of the new Hot & Crusty on east 14th St.: "For better or for worse, a hot & crusty opened on 14th and 1st. used to be a subway and GNC." Imbible spotted the place as well: "Though I generally don't support the chain-ization of the East Village, as a local, I must say that I'm not displeased to have a fancy deli in the 'hood. We've got tons of cafes and restaurants that are great for eating out, but there aren't many places that offer made-to-order takeout salads, bagels, etc." [POST-PLYWOOD]

4) Carroll Gardens: Brownstoner has the intel and a pic of new restaurant Olive Vine Cafe: "We spotted this signage at the soon-to-open new branch of Park Slope's Middle Eastern spot, the Olive Vine Cafe...There's some buzz about this block on Chowhound, where one user heard that next-door neighbor Donut House is also closing and will also be replaced by a Middle Eastern restaurant." [PLYWOOD]

5) Midtown West : A correspondent sends in a few shots of the overhaul of Brasserie Cognac du Monsieur Ballon, owned by Vittorio Assaf and Fabio Granato of Serafina. The place looks weeks away from a re-open. [PLYWOOD]

6) East Village: Found on the northeast corner of Avenue A and 13th street, a sign reading "Al Diwan, Lebanese Restaurant, Lounge, Cafe, Coming Soon." [PLYWOOD]

7) Chinatown: A reader sends in an updated plywood shot of Chinatown's Red Egg on 202 Centre St: "had seen the plywood report a few weeks ago about the Chinese restaurant Red Egg. I snapped this picture last week of the work going on in there. The workers said they are supposed to open mid to late April. It definitely doesn't look like your typical Chinatown interior." [PLYWOOD]

8) Williamsburg: Per the picture above, the project at 18 Beford by a Dumont bartender, the designer of Smith & MIlls, and a secret celebrity partner is making quick progress on their sliver of a restaurant on the Williamsburg/Greenpoint border. [PLYWOOD]

9) Carroll Gardens: A Brooklyn Life takes a look at plywood favorite, Frankies third restaurant: "The work to sure-up the walls of the corner space (formerly a dry cleaners) is now done, workers have started bricking the garage/driveway that leads from the current Frankie's backyard to Luquer Street (not visible in this photo), and now the facades on both of the Court Street fronts are being reworked. I saw the Franks poking their heads into the two buildings over the weekend." [PLYWOOD]
