Monday Opening Report: Palm Court, Bistro Milano, Lomito Certified Open, Ippudo Needs a Few More Weeks
Monday, March 3, 2008

This is the Monday Opening Report, a regular feature that provides the precise status of venues reported as open elsewhere. As per standard operating procedure around here, your contributions are so very welcome.

1) East Village: The debut of Japanese ramen chain Ippudo has been eagerly anticipated by so-called "rameniacs" throughout the city who are dying to get a taste of the chain's "signature pork-based tonkotsu served with spicy miso sauce." Lady Strongbuzz reported back in February that the plywood would come down for an opening date sometime in the first week of March. Status: Not Open. Actual opening date is March 31st. 65 4th Avenue; 212-388-0088. [Strongbuzz]

2) Midtown: Closed since 2005, The Plaza’s Palm Court reportedly reopened this weekend with chef Didier Virot and pastry chef Nicole Kaplan at the helm. According to NewYorkology: “Only a few people were eating, but The Plaza's famed Palm Court was indeed open and serving tea and brunch on Sunday, marking the weekend the historic hotel reopened after three years and $400 million of renovations.” Status: Certified Open. The Plaza Hotel, Fifth Avenue/Central Park South; 212-759-3000. [NewYorkology]

3) Midtown: Bistro Milano, not to be confused with Jason Denton’s soon-to-open, Bar Milano, is a new Italian standby that “quietly” opened two weeks ago in Midtown. Bottomless Dish has the lowdown: “Antipasti ranges from $11 to $16, and includes choices like ahi tuna tartar with cucumber in an avocado sauce. Pizza and pastas (some house-made) are available, and entrees cost $20-$38, not too surprising considering the neighborhood.” Status: Certified Open. 1350 Avenue of the Americas; 212-757-2600. [Bottomless Dish]

4) Park Slope: The 5th Avenue dining scene continues to expand in Park Slope with new vegan café, Earth Tonez. OTBKB has the early scoop from Park Slope Parents : “There's a really nice new vegan cafe on 5th ave, just next to the great hot dog place Willie's Dogs between 4th and 5th streets. It's called Earth Tonez and it has homemade vegan deserts including cupcakes, "cheese"cake, double chocolate cakes and more. They also make nice soups, sandwiches, wraps and salads - all Vegan.” Status: Certified Open. 349 5th Avenue, Park Slope; 718-395-1516 [OTBKB]

Two updates today:

5) Soho: In Thursday's Opening Report Lomito, the new Italian-Argentine resto from the Sosa Borella folks was set to open on Friday per TONY’s listings. Thrillist also chimed in, listing the same Friday opening date. Status: Certified Open. 300 Spring Street; 212-929-9494. [TONY]

6) Park Slope: Back to the Slope, last week that veggie favorite 'Snice's new Brooklyn location had been reported open by TONY, but upon checking status our phone calls went unanswered. Status: Not Open. According to their fliers, they will open on the 7th. 315 Fifth Avenue, Park Slope, 718-788-2121. [TONY]
