How Nish Lost His Stars
Friday, March 14, 2008

And speaking of Spitzer's Corner, there's something curious about its new chef. Wayne Nish, who started last week, has worked at four, three, two, and one starred restaurants (in that order) over the span of his career. Why the downward trajectory? "If you’re keeping track, it’s taken Nish a bit over twenty years to get from four stars to zero...March was a serious restaurant, no doubt about it. But by the time it closed, in 2007, it had lost some of the early luster...The casual make-over that turned March into Nish was a miscalculation...The failure at Varietal wasn’t Nish’s fault: after blistering reviews, the place was clearly on life support...So now, he is at a Lower East Side gastropub."
