Last we heard from the Florent trenches, owner Florent Morellet was deep in litigation with his landlord over some unpaid rent, overpaid taxes, and about $150,000 in damages. According to a piece in the Observer, the landlord wanted to raise the rent from around $6k a month to either $43k (broker's estimate) or $70k (Morellet's figure). Now the space is publicly on the market, repped by the Winick Group, for a whopping $700,000 a year for a lease that starts in May.
Feel free to mark this as the official beginning of the end. No steak frites joint in the city could afford that kind of rent in today's Meatpacking District. Come May, if a buyer is found at all, it's going to be retail, and it's going to be high end. Plan your vigils accordingly.
