Eater Inside: Bacaro

Kalina, 11/2/07.

Bacaro, new to Division Street, is Frank DeCarlo's follow up to Peasant, one of downtown's great rustic Italians. Here the menu is a bit less developed and the main room smaller and with something of an elegant flair. But, according to the hetero email newsletters—RareDaily, UrbanDaddy, and Thrillist—the real show is downstairs (per the Kalina, it wasn't photo ready). Something tells us the word 'catacomb' was used in the restaurant's PR materials.

Thrillist: The vaulted-ceiling'd cellar is honeycombed with candle-lit private rooms, and boasts two temp-controlled wine rooms and a marble-topped bar, a catacomb-like set-up Venetians would enjoy, were there basements not festering with dead gondoliers.

UrbanDaddy: The real draw of Bacaro, however, is its engrossing, catacumbal downstairs, all exposed brick, slate floors and rough wood accents. The lighting is dark, sexy.

RareDaily: An inside and outside staircase both lead you to an underground catacomb of exposed brick archways with wooden farm tables, illuminated by soft lighting and warm candles. The vibe is sexy.
