EaterWire: Ninth Street Espresso Space On 13th Street Under New Ownership & More!
Tuesday, August 14, 2007
EAST VILLAGE—More news about the shuttering of Ninth Street Espresso's 13th Street outpost, from owner Kenneth Nye: "Actually [Ninth Street Espresso] is not 'closing'... we are turning it over to one of our Baristi. His name is Ed H. and he has been pulling shots at NSE for a couple of years. Ed expressed an interest in owning his own shop at some point, and the timing just kinda worked out. As far as my reasons for selling, this location would be better served by a more 'general purpose' cafe... more food, drip coffee etc. Our model has become very specialized and I do not feel that we were maximizing on the potential of this location....Ed will do the space justice." WEST VILLAGE—A follow-up call, in regards to yesterday's 'Wire post about what exactly was going on at French bistro Jarnac, yielded the following information about the restaurant: They had to shut down briefly due to flood damage, but will be open again starting tonight. Then, the restaurant will be closed again from August 26th through September 3rd for their annual summer vacation. We're assuming that after the 3rd, it'll be business as normal. [EaterWire]

Yes, in other words-- YOU CLOSED. No shame in it, and I'm sure "Ed will do the space justice" but you sold, the name is changing, etc. Closed.
Dropped by the new "Everyman Espresso" this morning, and it's basically back to the way things were there before NSE started messing with it back in June or so--same pastries, same blend (Espresso Toscano), and one of my favorite NSE baristas. All is right for me on the coffee front.
Edmond is the nicest barista ever! I think it's great--this is the first time a barista branched out from a shop like NSE, Joe or Grumpy right; to own their own??
I like Ed a lot - one of my favorite NSE baristi - and I know he will work hard to make it work. But I do know Ken screwed him over issues of staffing and equipment. Ken had been trying to dump the space for several months so not sure about the comment "timing just kinda worked out"...
