Delayed: American Grill

Despite a glitzy declaration of their grand opening on Monday (to blame: Cutlets), above is the scene at American Grill, the eventually-24/7 diner entry replacing Keiv, at this time. A tipster files from Second Avenue and 7th Street, with plenty of neighborhood attitude:

Attached please find a sign posted at the American Grill which is located in the old Kiev space on 2nd Avenue and 7th Street. "Due to a water main replacement... we will have a grand reopening as soon as this issue is resolved." It seems that a water main problem has forced them to close for an unspecified period of time. I live on the block, and we have indeed experienced water outages both Sunday and Monday nights.

If this establishment were within sight of McSorley's at the other end of the block, these guys might stand a chance -- Bounce Douche isn't going to bring enough drunk frat boys jonesin' for mediocre pancakes to save these folks. Paging David Chang's real estate broker.
In the shadows, the Deathwatch Committee raises a collective eye brow.

I live in the neighborhood and ate there on Sunday. The food was actually good. Better than Veselka. They took so long to open though, and now closed again, I think they'll have a hard time surviving.

I live on 7th between 1st and 2nd. We had that huge water main break a couple of months ago (on their corner, of course), and subsequently my entire block has been dealing with water main repairs. I think they shut off my block's water on Monday at midnight and had it back in the early AM. Can't imagine running a restaurant without water (although there are half a dozen on my side of the block -- didn't think to check whether any of them were effected, what with me being asleep and all)

I haven't been in to American Grill, but it looks like a nice little diner. There should be enough neighborhood business to keep it open. Sometimes even hipsters just want a friggin' omelette and coffee.

Yeah, I can't see how this place is going to stick around, except for the fact that it took them soooo damn long to open it's likely whoever's behind it has a large bankroll. What the hell kind of name is "American Grill" for a diner in the EVil anyway? Should have just called it Kiev, put in a dinky little diner open 24/7, and left it at that.

I have changed my mind and now agree that it won't last long. The bakery next door is open. The bars and restaurants along its side of 7th Street are all open. So does American Grill have its own private water main or sumpthin'?

Deathwatch committee, take note!

That place looks unbelievely ugly and totally out of place in the East Village. It would have a better shot at surviving in Times Square.

#2 - "Sometimes even hipsters just want a friggin' omelette and coffee."

Yeah, but they don't want it from some slick-lookin' joint. Want to open a place to get an omlette and coffee? Think "faux-dive".

This place has a giant TV screen in it. Enough with that shit.

A "faux-dive" full of faux-hipsters, sounds like a great place to get a meal. I would rather a comfortable place with decent food. Who cares about giant TVs. But I'm sure your faux-dive will be opening in Time Square soon enough, so enjoy. I'll be in my neighborhood enjoying breakfast without people like you.

Obviously because it took a year to open there is some heavy-duty money behind the joint... and with the water main break the owners probably took off for vacation for the rest of July... But if it ever gets off the ground it should put Moonstruck on 5th out of it's misery... talk about a bankroll! That place is always down to 3 diners max, except on weekends when they get the 12-step meeting business... but that's not enough to stay open... I predict they'll be out of business by 12/31/07.
