EaterWire: Rice Prepares For Liquor License Battle & More!
Wednesday, April 4, 2007

NOLITA—Pan-Asian restaurant Rice is moving from Mott Street to Elizabeth Street between Houston and Bleecker. They're currently asking for support from the public as they wait to see if their liquor license is approved. " Our license can’t travel so we need a new one for the future RICE on Elizabeth St. In 1996 when we got our license on Mott St. there were no others in the neighborhood, so the license was easy to get. Since then the neighborhood has changed and there is resistance to new licenses." Good luck to you, little eatery. [EaterWire Inbox]

CHELSEA—Markt has started offering breakfast, including various egg dishes, hot cereal, croissants and Belgian waffles (natch), from 8am until 11:30am daily. [EaterWire]

WILLIAMSBURG—If barbecue joint Pies-N-Thighs hasn't been hitting it out of the park lately, well, maybe it's because they're down a chef and co-founder, one Steven Tanner. Sarah Buck, the other half of the eatery, is currently going it alone. [Cutlets]

LONG ISLAND—Chef Ed Witt, who recently left his restaurant Varietal, already has plans for a new fine dining establishment. The 80-seat bistro will be called Taste, and is located in Long Island (660 Franklin Avenue in Garden City, to be exact). From the press release, "Taste will offer the best of both worlds, including sophisticated, ingredient-driven classic American cooking as well as a casual, comfortable dining experience. The restaurant will include an eclectic 100 bottle wine list focusing on regional American wines in addition to classic hand crafted cocktails and an extensive beer list featuring both seasonal and regional specialties." At Taste, Witt will be working with John Cantwell, an alumnus of several Long Island restaurants. [EaterWire]
